I've never heard of her either, and I often feel woefully unhip when it comes to new music/artists/Amys/what-have-you. Any new music I find out about is through the charity of my college friends (who worked for the radio station and still "keep up" on music -- whatever that means), my sister (who belongs to a bunch of cheap music download communitites, talks unabashedly to hip guys in record stores -- this seems to be the most effective way -- and reads Pitchfork reviews), and occasionally other friends (like you turned me on to the wonderful K.T. Turnstall and Francis recently made me a mix of new music that sounds like old music I like). I've tried to tell myself that other people spend time seeking out new music like I spend it investigating books and shows...so, OK: I'll give them tips on what to read or see, and they can tell me what to listen to.

You should try www.pandora.com because when I remember it I always find new music there. You pick somebody you like and then the program plays that person and new people that are similar in style. I first heard of Regina Spektor that way and I love her now.
