I'm reading through Sharyn McCrumb's series of "Ballad" novels, set in Appalachia, and encountered that word early on in one of them. I had previously encountered it for the first time in one of Lisa Wingate's novels last year or the year before. Previous to that, I cannot recall ever having heard the word despite having grown up in Maryland.

Was the Wingate novel set in Appalachia too?

I seem to recall it was set in either Georgia or North Carolina, so yes.
