[Character name] Altair Ibn-La’Ahad
[Age] 26
[Canon] Assassin’s Creed
[Point in time taken from canon] Post Assassin’s Creed

[Background]

Altair’s parents were both Assassin’s, his mother died in childbirth and his father was executed when he was 11. Despite witnessing his father’s death he did not feel real grief, because of the rules of the Brotherhood Altair’s father never showed love or affection towards his son. Instead, he saw Al Mualim as more of a father figure as it was Al Mualim who trained and raised him.

Altair quickly rose through the ranks of the Brotherhood and became a Master by the age of 25. He was then charged with retrieving an artifact known as the Chalice which was kept in the Temple of the Sand. He learned that three keys were needed in order to complete his task and that he would have to obtain these from the Templars who owned them.

Altair managed to find and retrieve the first two keys with little issue, assassinating the Templar owners and helping the citizens of the city they were located in. While retrieving the last key from the leader of the Templar Order, Basilisk, Altair came upon a traitor to the Brotherhood. He confronted Harash, who was the second-in-command for the Brotherhood, and after a duel Altair defeated him. Unfortunately, the Templar master had escaped.

Altair learned that an associate of his, Adha, was actually the Chalice. When he told her of this the Templar master overheard and kidnapped Adha to Tyre. Altair followed and managed to kill Basilisk on his ship, but Adha was held on a different ship and Altair could not find her.

In early 1191, during the height of the Third Crusade, Altair and two others, Malik and Kadar A-Sayf, are sent by Al Mualim to Solomon’s Temple to retrieve an artifact. While making his way in he breaks two of the tenets of the Brotherhood, not killing innocents and hiding in plain sight.

Inside the Temple they encounter Robert de Sable, the archenemy of the Order. Altair broke the last tenet, risking the Brotherhood, by confronting Robert. He was thrown from the temple by Robert, leaving Malik and Kadar inside alone. Altair escapes and makes his way back to Masyaf in order to report his failure.

While he was speaking to Al Mualim Malik returned with the artifact and a heavily injured left arm, reporting that Altair’s actions lead to Kadar’s death and his injury. Only minutes after Malik's arrival the fortress was attacked by Robert and the Templars. Altair was told to lead the defense of the castle. He managed to sneak behind the Templars and unleashed logs to crush the army.

After the attack, Al Mualim once again addressed the issues of Altair breaking all three tenets of the Creed, failing in his mission to acquire the treasure, and causing the death of one brother and the incapacitation of another. Al Mualim stabbed him, and when Altair awakens it is to the news that his ranks were stripped away. He was then given a list of nine men who must be killed in exchange for his own.

As Altair made his way through the list he began to uncover a conspiracy. What he had been told of each target and what he witnessed, while it still proved the men needed killing, were not the same. He began to doubt what he had been told and demanded answers to the connections between all his victims. Al Mualim explained that each target had been a member of the Knights Templar and the artifact that had been taken from Robert had the power to control the minds of others. Altair accepted the explanation.

Altair’s last target was the head of the order, Robert de Sable. He learned that de Sable would be in Jerusalem for the funeral of Majd Addin (his sixth target) and made plans to assassinate him there. It was however a trap.

After he killed the Templars who Robert brought with him Altair turned to de Sable. He managed to defeat him, and when he removed the helm he found it was a decoy. Robert had sent a woman in his place while he traveled to Arsuf to unite the Crusaders and the Saracens against the Assassins.

Altair reported back to Malik (who finally accepts his apology for his brother’s death) what it is that he had been told and after an argument told Malik to search Solomon’s Temple for answers while he rode to Arsuf.

Altair fought his way to King Richard’s camp and upon revealing himself was accused of attempting to assassinate the King. He denied it and instead accused Robert of treachery. Robert denied it and Richard ordered a trial by duel in order to determine the truth. He stated that G-d would not let the truthful one die. Altair defeated de Sable who, with his dying breath, revealed that Al Mualim had been a Templar all along and had used Altair to eliminate those who know of the Apple's existence.

Altair arrived at Masyaf only to find that the village had been put into a trance. He fought his way to the castle, through both villagers and other Assassins, before being saved by Malik and others from Jerusalem. He sent Malik and his men to distract those have been hypnotized so he can reach Al Mualim.

Upon entrance into Al Mualim's garden, he found himself bound by the Apple, and demanded an explanation. Al Mualim revealed that he planned on using the Apple to control the minds of people and force their obedience. He summoned illusions of Altair’s nine Templar targets in order to kill him. Altair defeated them (again) before being bound and confronted by Al Mualim. Multiple copies of the Master were then summoned and Altair fought them off as well.

Before they dueled a final time Al Mualim admitted that he tried to use the Apple on Altair, but the illusions did not work due to his mental strength. Altair managed to defeat his Master and the Apple rolled away from Al Mualim's body, it proceeded to activate itself and showed a map revealing the location of all the Pieces of Eden.

[Personality]

Altaïr was at first very standoffish, rude, and arrogant. He took no direction from his peers and did not follow the tenets of his Creed, believing himself above the rules the others must follow. This leads him to be disgraced and he must earn back his ranking, taking orders from those he previously looked down upon and belittled. These circumstances do lead to him having a change in personality; he no longer believes himself to be better than the others, and shows concern over their safety and the safety of innocents who can be in harm’s way.

Altaïr has recently learned to take criticism and advice from his peers; and while he does still have hostile reactions to those whom he believes to belittle him, he does listen and take their words to heart. This does not however make him a nicer person; Altaïr is not a social person and has very few confidantes.

He is not very patient when it comes to informants, but is willing to wait for the perfect moment to strike his target. Altaïr also shows a dry sense of humor, though for the most he is very serious, preferring to use logic to make his point.

During particularly traumatic times, Altaïr does tend to slip into old habits and his old personality. He becomes cold and aloof, speaking to others as if they are beneath him. He speaks in shorter sentences and is quicker to anger, although with those he respects and trusts he does remain polite and friendly.

At first Altaïr is motivated by his pride, wanting to regain his position of power in the Brotherhood and prove his critics wrong; this morphs into wanting to help the people of the Holy Land and stop the Crusades. He firmly believes in the philosophy of “kill one to save a thousand” and does not kill innocents. He does research on his targets and finds proof that they are evil men.

From the point in canon that he is taken, Altaïr has just been betrayed by his Master. He was the one who raised him and was his only father figure. Al Mualim’s betrayal has left Altaïr doubting his purpose. He has to find a balance between what he believes is true and the knowledge that his targets may have been innocents in the way of Al Mualim’s schemes.

[Abilities]

Altaïr is a master assassin who has been trained since a young age. He is a master of hand-to-hand and extremely skilled with swords, daggers, throwing knives and his hidden blade. He is able to blend in with any crowd and is a master of pick pocketing, eavesdropping, and can follow a target unseen until he strikes. He is also very intuitive, showing several times that he can understand a situation without being fully informed.

He is very agile and quick, able to scale any building and jump from rooftop to rooftop and balance of narrow beams. Physically he is quite strong and his endurance and stamina are very high; he is capable of fighting off several guards at once as well as fleeing if the smarter option. His training also includes being able to survive falls from great heights using bales of hay as landing pads.

Altaïr is also capable of using Eagle Vision, which he uses to identify friend, foe, and informant by illuminating them in colors only he can see.
[Other important stuff]
At the point in canon I take him from he does have the Apple of Eden in his possession, although he is unable to use it.

[First Person]

[The cameral flicks on to show Altair sitting at his desk, a finger idly tapping.] I believe we should hold a gathering. In person, not over these devices. I have many questions about this future you speak of. Of those devices in the sky to control the minds of men. [Agitation is quite clear as he slashes a hand through the air and he reluctantly continues.] This situation is beyond my understanding and I require more information on this matter.

There is another matter to be discussed. Desmond, we will also be speaking of your training. Blade mastery is a priority for you at the moment. I will not have you defenseless.

Contact me with the best times for this to happen. Safety and peace, brothers.

[Third Person]

Altair barely paused before jumping the gap between buildings. He had been stuck in this place a few months now and was enjoying the sense of freedom running across rooftops brought. It seemed so long since he had been able to fly like the Eagle he was named for and he could feel the stresses of this new world falling into the background.

One thing however stuck in the front of his mind. Desmond. He had descendants here, proof that although he had no children back home, he would eventually. The boy, and he was a boy in Altair’s mind, was not what he had expected of one reared with the Brotherhood.

Desmond had no real training, only what he learned while living the memories and lives of his ancestors; a concept most strange. The little Desmond spoke of was similar to Altair’s own youth, although the complete isolation was unheard of. How could a novice be expected to learn if not in the cities? Was the Templar threat that great? Altair knew of Desmond’s imprisonment at the hands of the Templars, but what caused them to become so powerful?

A landing jolted him more than he was expecting, knocking him out of his musings. The lack of practice free running showed itself as he almost lost his grip on the ledge above him. The brief scramble for purchase caused a shower of pebbles to rain down to the streets below and he knew he’d been spotted.

“What is that man doing? Is he drunk?”

A brief grin appeared on his face even as he pulled himself up to the roof. The question was enough to remind him of home, of times before strange treasures and betrayals. The memories of better times were enough to have him running again, flying over rooftops and leaping gaps between buildings.

He spotted one of the leaf piles he had recently constructed and effortlessly performed a Leap of Faith into it. Even as he removed himself from the pile, he was planning to learn more of Desmond’s time with the Templars. Perhaps he would find a way to stop their plans before they were started.
