The mini cooper/mini clubman as a 1400 lb towing capacity, and gets even better gas mileage than the fit. It's also more well built, but is a lot more expensive, and has only 2 doors (mini) or 3 doors (clubman).

Ooh, good point. But I think we need 4+ doors.

You might consider a 5 door Mazda 3 or a Suzuki SX4. They both get worse gas mileage than the fit, but are bigger. More like a Matrix.

A bit late, but we love our Yaris... it actually feels less claustrophobic than the Matrix. Can't tow anything either, though.
