As I am currently at Purdue I can speak well about the transition from Williamstown to Indiana. In short, Williamstown is a mecca of activity and cosmopolitan-ness compared to Indiana. That is, Indiana is to Williamstown as Williamstown is to Boston or New York City. If the grad school at Notre Dame is worth suffering Indiana for a few years (like aerospace at Purdue is worth suffering for), then don't worry about. But keep in mind that we're talking about living truly in the middle of nowhere with people who've never even heard of, say, Don Quixote, Kant, or Cicero.
