I just tonight noticed that the girl next door watches me out of her window as I gesticulate wildly in the imaginary conversations which I have as I smoke cigarettes just out my back door. I wonder if she thinks its (1) funny because its cute; (2) funny because its creepy; or (3) just plain funny ( Read more... )

Does it bother anyone else that in all of our research into outer space, we have found not sign one of life,

Not true, bubba.

The methane bubbles found by the viking explorer showed definate signs of life. That paired with the findings for water as well as higher concentrations of methane have lead scientists to suspect that there is a sicadan (spelling) rythm to life on mars.

There was also the 'wow' finding back in the 70s by some guy scanning the stars. Sure he never saw it again, but that can be explained by the vastness of the universe, the amount of power it must have taken to generate it, and the direction it must be sent in to get here.

I must say, I don't find this particularly convincing. Taking this information into account does not prevent me from thinking of life as such an exceedingly rare phenomenon that we are unlikely to ever find another form of it with which we could communicate before the extinction of earth people.

indeed.

Here's a little fun-fact from probability theory that may support your claim:

If you were to take a random walk (that would be, move one step, then choose randomly a direction) in plane (that is of only integers, and extends in infinate directions) for an infinate amount of time, you would, at some point, hit every point on the plane. The reason here is the constraint of freedom of movement to two directions (don't ask for the proof, I coudn't reproduce it).

HOWEVER, if you were to take a random walk in 3-space (or any dimension > 2) no matter how much time you spent, you may not ever hit some points...

The point? Unless we take something more than a random approach (note: we don't live countably infinate space, yet when we systematically 'pick' a direction we are settling on one 'point' Since it extends infiately out, there will be holes missed) at searching, even given an infinate amount of time, we'll never actually find something... especially if they don't want to be found.

I agree with you about the DVD features. My brother has told me that he's never once watched a single special feature on any of his DVDs. Sometimes I wonder how closely he and I are related.
