Jacob took a tentative first sip of the ale set on the bar for him, casting his glance around the room. Despite his initial enthusiastic entry into this...place...he was quiet tonight, an automatic reverent silence for the stories he was preparing to hear ( Read more... )

Snake had been watching this place once Jake had named it for thier meeting spot. Paranoia was a necessity in his life for sheer survival but to his relief it seemed to be a quiet bar. Snake walked in without drawing attention to himself and ordered a drink before joining Jake at the other end of the bar. He was going to need a lot of strong drinks if he was going to tell what he had originally decided.

Nice place.

He commented off hand as he looked at the other patrons. He wasn't much for greetings either at least not tonight.

He hadn't even seen the other man walk in, so he started a little and looked up from his notes when he heard Snake's voice. Then he gave a small smile. "Yes, I thought so."

Jake shifted a little on the stool where he sat and took another drink. He was anxious to jump right into the reason they'd met here, but Snake--for various other qualities besides his name--didn't seem like the kind of person who appreciated being rushed. "Of course, being rather new here, I just picked out a place that felt... familiar." The bar did indeed have the feeling of a 19th-century pub: knotted wood, low lighting, hushed conversation.

It's dark, i like it. Snake smiled and motioned toward one of the empty booths. We're going to be here a while, prefer my ass didn't go numb on a barstool.

He was trying to lighten the mood and relax the man sitting on the stool. Snake could sense the tension in his companion and it sparked that predator-prey drive deep inside Snake. He refrained from heeding its call knowing most people, men anyway, were uncomfortable in his presence until he started talking or relaxed from his usual mood.

He didn't wait for Jake he walked toward the booth purposely picking one that allowed him to sit with his back to the wall and gave him a good view of the bar. Simply being in a defendable position away from the middle of the room visibly relaxed Snake.

Jake hesitated only a moment, then picked up his drink and his book and followed Snake. After a few seconds of silence sitting at the table--and seeing how the other man had seemed to relax some--Jacob made the decision to speak up.

"So you said you had..." He searched for the exact words. "...folk stories."

"And I'm guessing they didn't stay cool?" Jake would have been surprised if they had.

No. I hit a few places alone but things really got crazy when I hooked up with another thief. Met my fiance about the same time, a year ago now. Things get complicated. I lost seven years somehow when I met my girl. Hell she lost almost 2000 so who am I to complain.

I hit another bank but got away this time. tried my hand at assasination for hire and started gunfighting. Things got busy in a hurry.

Jake tilted his head to one side at the mention of the 'lost' years. "Lost 2000 years?" he asked once Snake had finished talking. "Is she some kind of immortal?"

She's not immortal, neither am I really. Snake shrugged and by his expression it was easy to see he was still confused about the situation.

All I know is she was walking a beach in Ancient Greece to see a friend and I was running my ass off to get away from a gang that had just stabbed me. I ran out on a beach and was suddenly on a different beach. I was standing trying to catch my breath and figure shit out when she walked up to me. Your guess is as good as mine about what happened.

Best we can figure is some one wanted us to meet but haven't a clue who.
