Having a small break between the Christmas rush and New Year's Eve fun, I thought it would be a good idea to go get a hair cut, as my hair had been getting annoyingly long. I like my long hair, it's just that at a certain point, I'm ok with cutting off a few inches. I really like the hair salon I go to, however they are kinda pricey, so I typically get several inches cut off twice a year. I had gone in August, but only got 3 inches off and now realized that it just wasn't quite enough to get me through a full six months. So this time, I thought I would ask for just a bit more... 4 or 5 inches sounded good. I even measured it out. It would leave me with hair nicely a few inches below my shoulders and by the summer SCA event time, it would be perfect length.
So last night I went to the salon and asked for 4 or 5 inches trimmed off the bottom. Typically they do the whole head massage thingy and then take you over to the shampoo sinks before they trim your hair. However, this time before she took me to the sinks... I hear a quick, snip snip snip. ... A glance in the mirror had me frantically trying to guess how high her scissors was against my back in relation to where I thought the end of my hair used to be. As we got up to go to the sinks, I tried not to stare too hard down at the floor, visually trying to assess how long those pieces were in the pile of hair behind the chair, but a side glance in the mirror told me that my idea of 4-5 inches, and her idea of 4-5 inches had a good 2-3 inch discrepancy. And that was before she was done with all of the trimming and evening out.
I took a deep breath. It's just hair. However, seeing as I have had long hair my entire life, it's a bit harder to see that much mistakenly cut off, than someone who is used to it. Thankfully over the past few months, I had been getting really annoyed with it's length. Maybe a few extra inches wouldn't be soo bad. As we left the shampoo sinks and made our way back to the chair... she caught me looking at the pile of hair again and said "My, look at all that hair!" ... "uh.. yeah.. it's kinda scary," I replied. It was only then that she 'double checked' with how much we were "trimming" off :P As we were past the point of no return, I decided the best course of action was to just go with it. Besides her inability to count inches, she was doing a really excellent job of trimming and shaping my hair exactly as I like.
She blowed it out nicely, finished trimming and handed me a mirror. It didn't seem that bad... it looked like it was still a few inches below my shoulders.. maybe a few inches high, but not bad. It looked long enough that I could still pull it up into a bun for work. And it did look nice... so not so bad afterall... or at least I kept telling myself. Half of me was excited, and the other half dreading going home to look it over carefully in the mirror. Once home, I put it up in a bun to keep it out of my face while working on a sewing project, and forgot about it for a few hours. Until it was time to go to bed, and took it down... It was lovely, and wavy from being up... and it was several inches shorter!! While it was a decent length when all blown out straight, I had totally forgotten that waves would make it seem shorter. As in, just to my shoulders shorter. As in a good 5 inches shorter than my original intention. Twice as much!! My hair is naturally wavy, and being much less weighed down by the length, those waves are going to be much more pronounced... and the end product could be even shorter than it was last night. This morning, after toweling my damp hair, as predicted, the extra waviness began to take shape. I quickly pulled it up into a bun before I could figure out how short it's going to be. I haven't taken it down yet. I'm waiting until this afternoon, once it's drier, to take a peek. So we'll see.
I do think it looks cute. I like it. But it's short. Shampooing my hair this morning, my hands wondered where the rest of my hair was... why did it seem like I had so much extra shampoo... and when pulling it around, why do they run out of hair?? It just felt so... short. But it's cute. And healthy. And as it grows back in, it will be more wavy as there isn't the length to weigh it down. And thankfully it has a good six months to grow before the summer SCA events begin and when I really like to have long hair. And if anything, at least I won't have to get a hair cut for quite some time. Needless to say however, the next time I go back I'm bringing my ruler! :P
In other news, the xmas holiday was fun and all has been going pretty well. I'd like to note however, a stomach flu is not an acceptable gift to give on Christmas eve. (thanks mom) I guess passing around the breathalyzer my brother got as a gift, to see how funnily drunk we were, wasn't so funny afterall :P
