When Fans Collide Over the Phone

Jul 16, 2012 09:09

I just had the most awesome chat over-the-phone with one of the IT Guys:

Me: Ummm, you know that program you pushed to my computer via the [Jolly Green Giant's] network? It did not install.

Donnie the IT Guy: *sigh* Yes. I see. Did you...

Me: Yes! Yes! I did turn it off and on again before I called you!

Well, I grew up in the computer generation, which means that I know that rebooting solves almost 85% of my problems.

Maybe the reason why it's starting to sink in isn't so much because people are learning, but because you have a more computer-savvy work force? :-)

Could be because of the type of people I've worked with. Generally, calling IT is the last resort. Generally, my older, less tech-savvy co-workers will grab me or one of my younger co-workers to help them wresting some computer thing to the ground before calling IT.

It's also a large part of the reason why people at work thing I'm 10 years younger than I am. I'm about on par computer-savvy wise with people in that age group.

Now, another part of the puzzle is simply that American businesses have a nasty habit of laying off their older workers and replacing them with younger, lower-paid workers. This leaves the older workers chronically unemployed and unable to land an equivalent job, even though they may be 10 years away from the minimum retirement age (62 at reduced benefits).

So...yeah. There's a good shot that there is a darker reason for it.

Also, re: your icon. I've been seeing this joke about how David Tennant fanboys things that's been making me laugh... (Take over the role and marry the actor's daughter!)

The first episode of that show might be the funniest thing I ever saw. We laughed SO MUCH.

The first episode had me kind of rolling my eyes in exasperation because I thought the audience laughter was a laugh track. It's the second episode that sold me.

It's in that same vein of Community/Arrested Development/Black Books/Father Ted humor where everything is pretty absurd while somehow still being grounded in reality.
