Defining Bittersweet

For some random reason, I decided to look at the Website of the first post-college daily newspaper I ever worked for and saw that a reporter I used to work with is retiring today.

To make it doubly bittersweet, he was in the line of reporters that "bumped" me from my job as a beat reporter during my first-ever experience with layoffs.

You know, there have been a number of jobs I've applied for recently that wanted to know my ENTIRE employment history from the time I was 18. I am now 34. Fortunately, the bar exam application also wanted to know that, so at least I have the list of places of employment. What I don't always have is the name of my supervisor, most of whom aren't at that place anymore, or phone numbers of places that no longer exist. I mean, yes, JoAnn Fabrics as a company exists, but the store I worked in does not.

And so many of those jobs aren't relevant to whatever it is I'm apllying for, and given that the bulk of them happened either while I was in college, so I a summer ehre, a summer there wasn't uncommon, or during the downturns in 2001-2003 and now while I'm looking for a hard-to-find legal job... a baby boomer hiring manager is going to think I'm shiftless, rather than just trying to be a productive member of society where I can pay my rent and eat sometimes.

That is just out and out weird. Legally, they can't go back more than 7 to 10 years (or maybe that's a state law rather than a federal law ( ... )
