It didn't happen often that Liz lay wide awake in bed, especially not on the night before her birthday. But this time, it was different. The whole school knew Laurian had been captured and Rei had asked her if she wanted to join in the search to Laurian. Liz had tried it, but much to her own dismay, her skills were not good enough. But somehow ( Read more... )

"MMhmm."

Katelyn was slightly restless. The agile fighter normally slept soundly, but tonight she tossed and turned. She normally would be woken by the slightest sound, her instincts sharp even late into the night, but she was not aware that a visitor had joined her in bed until she heard that soft whisper.

A strong arm reached out for Liz, possessively pulling her closer. "I'll, be careful", Katelyn drowsily mumbled as she snuggled up to her own special person. A small, cat-like yawn then followed. "I promise....I'll be careful..."

A small, though still worried smile appeared on Liz' face at the reassuring, sleepy mumbling. She lay close against Katelyn, felt her strong arms around her, holding her close, protecting her...

Then why was she still worried? Katelyn wouldn't even join the main fight, she'd join the team searching for Laurian. Nothing could go wrong with that.

Liz sighed and began to stroke Kate's hair with slow, gentle strokes. "Come home safely," she whispered. "I promise I'll have your favourite cookies ready."

Holding her Liz close, Kate settled down into a more comfortable position. The soft touch of Liz's fingers through her hair gently roused her from her slumber. "Happy Birthday," she whispered back lazily.

Slowly her eyes fluttered open. As Katelyn gazed at the girl she adored, she greeted her with a sleepy smile. "Don't worry," she said before planting a small kiss on her forehead. "I'll come home safe. I have to." The Slayer was a little worried as well, anxious about the importance of the coming day, but she tried not to acknowledge this seeing that Liz seemed worried as well and in need of some comfort. "I'll come home safe," she added softly, "because I couldn't stand to be without you."

The smile became a bit broader at the final sentence. "I know. I couldn't stand to be without you either." Her hand moved a bit lower to Kate's back and Liz let out a little, content sigh. She loved to lie next to her girlfriend like this. If only today would be a day without worries...

"If you come home safe and you all managed to rescue Laurian..." Liz paused for a moment, thinking of how she should put her feelings in words. "I... I guess it'd be the best present I ever got on my birthday."
