Honestly, the best thing is just to get a camera, maybe a basic book that explains things like f/stop, shutter speed, ISO, depth of field, etc and just shoot shoot shoot. Like everywhere you go, just take your camera and experiment with different settings.
I've got a bottom of the line Canon DSLR and it works pretty well and does what I need it to. It's the XSi, but I think it's marketed as the 450D in Europe.
i'm gonna have a look on Amazon for a good beginner's guide book. Then convince my fella that if he can spend money on cars, I can spend money on a nice shiny new camera :D
