I'm so angry right now. I want to hit something. My brother called to tell me that the home I grew up in is rumored to no longer be standing, that 2 of my friends have yet to be accounted for and 2 of their grandparents are dead. i thought about this all day yesterday, and here's what i came up with: it's not that we don't care; it's that we don't WANT to care. we don't WANT to comprehend the enormous tragic results of this storm. we can't don't want the pain. whether or not that's fair or right is beyond me to decide.

no you're right. i also think that, as bynum touch on in his post, few americans know pain and tragedy, so they don't know how to empathize with those who do. they have no comparison of the pain and it's so easy to turn a blind eye to it. I'm very guilty of this, particularly when it comes to Iraq. I feel so removed from that situation that none of it even seems real to me.

The extent to which our generation is sheltered is a danger for our own future.
