1sentence challenge; theme set Gamma. Unlike the Karin/Cate themes, this is not in chronological order.
#01 - Ring
He glances at the phone in his hand and the name on the caller ID-‘Joanne Myer’- and just lets it keep on ringing.
#02 - Hero
He was her hero and her saviour and she only made his life hell; but he forgave her every time.
#03 - Memory
Mano just stared at her thin and scared form, collapsed on his kitchen floor and remembered the girl who fitted so perfectly in his arms and led him around the dance floor, the girl with the perfect skin and gorgeous hair; he wondered what had happened to that girl as he dialled triple nine, and why she had left him with this one instead.
#04 - Box
It was a box: it was brown and plain looking, with a lid that was (badly) taped shut; but when she opened it she screamed- “You bought me the dress!”
#05 - Run
Some days, she just wanted to grab his hand and run, far away from it all where they could be happy; then there were days like this…
#06 - Hurricane
Joanne swept into his life like a hurricane, destroying everything she touched and dragging him in, frightenly powerful with the ability to cause unrivalled chaos; but as he floated now in the eye of the storm, he revelled in the feeling of her power.
#07 - Wings
Joanne had to watch in silence, as if someone had pressed pause, as Mano walked up a staircase that wasn’t there and feathers flew up to form white wings around him; he turned and smiled at her, then the floor fell away from her feet and she fell, still silent until he would mouth the word ‘goodbye’ and it was always then she started screaming.
#08 - Cold
When they curled together under a blanket in front of the electric heater, Joanne discovered that if she closed her eyes it didn’t seem like winter at all.
#09 - Red
The red bottles were the ones she saw most frequently on his desk, and she wondered what they smelt like.
#10 - Drink
Lisa downed a scotch and her brother followed as he had done all night, meeting her shot for shot, and she wished he’d just tell her what Joanne had done this time.
#11 - Midnight
It was midnight and it was raining when Mano rang her doorbell but Lisa wasn’t surprised; her brother always did have a flare for the dramatic and she knew he’d probably been standing there for half an hour waiting for the right moment.
#12 - Temptation
Temptation was blonde and tanned with ice blue eyes, and he didn’t want to resist it.
#13 - View
The view from the window was gorgeous- you could see the city stretch out so far that it hit the ocean and the sun glinted off all the metal and glass to create a glowing effect; Joanne clung tighter to his arm and they smiled at each other in agreement: “here.”
#14 - Music
Lisa cradled her brother’s form, passed out from too much alcohol, singing softly, “I could have told you she’d hurt you, love you a while then desert you, if only you’d asked, I could have told you so…”
#15 - Silk
He rubbed the blonde strands of hair between his thumb and forefinger and grinned- “I love your new shampoo.”
#16 - Cover
The song didn’t sound the same and he couldn’t find the beat no matter what he did- whoever this band was, their cover sucked- but when she told him to close his eyes and breathe slowly it was there again like it he’d never lost it.
#17 - Promise
“I won’t always be here, you know. One day I’ll leave and you’ll be alone again.”
#18 - Dream
She didn’t mind the nightmares because there was always a comforting arm to wrap around her waist and fight them away.
#19 - Candle
Mano had perfumes that smelt fantastic, and Joanne had candles that smelt of burning plastic, so even if they were both weird things to collect, it balanced out.
#20 - Talent
After the first day of class, she turned to him, pointed to his favourite student and exclaimed that kid’s got some talent, he’ll go far; he decided there and then he liked her.
#21 - Silence
It was what they didn’t say that got the point across better than words ever could.
#22 - Journey
Joanne packed the last of her things in her bag, and then paused; when Mano came home, his shower gel was missing leaving a note in its place (see you in a week, lovely).
#23 - Fire
The lights on the stage were hot and bright, like miniature suns; but the heat didn’t affect them- they were already burning, leaving singed footprints in patterns on the stage.
#24 - Strength
"I wish I had your strength, Mano, but I don't; please forgive me..."
#25 - Mask
She could tell when he was wearing the mask, the mask he used when he danced; the way his face was calmer, more open, an act of peace he forced upon himself- she wondered if anyone else knew it was fake.
#26 - Ice
Joanne was a sculpture made of ice; warmth melted it and once it melted it would never be the same again- though, Mano thought, kissing her forehead, this could be a good thing.
#27 - Fall
She fell backwards, eyes closed, and worry was unknown to her; Mano was just there and he would always, always catch her before she hit the ground.
#28 - Forgotten
She found it at the back of the pantry; biscuits and tins and boxes had piled up high in front of it until it had been forgotten, and she couldn’t help but wonder if one day the two of them would be like this- completely unknown and forgotten by the people who had called them “stars.”
#29 - Dance
Dance; it was what they did- competitions had been won, classes had been taught, practice had occurred, but more importantly it was what they did by candle light and to old music late at night in their living room.
#30 - Body
She liked just watching him dance almost as much as she liked dancing with him, because he moved as if the music was inside his own mind, a part of his body and soul.
#31 - Sacred
They shared everything with each other from his perfume to her hairbrush, clothing to utensils, the bed to the paintbrushes, but the one thing they refused to share were the sacred gummy bears; he’d lost count of how many times they’d fought over the least red one, but he always gave in and let Joanne have it- of course, he’d lean over and kiss her, stealing it out of her mouth as soon as she’d put it in, but she never complained.
#32 - Farewells
When she left, he didn’t say a word to her, just sat by the window and watched the street until she walked into his line of sight; then he touched the glass as she gazed up at the apartment, before turning and walking back to the bedroom- they’d never been good at goodbyes.
#33 - World
There was a map of the globe pinned on their wall, plastered with shiny coloured stars to mark the places they wanted to visit; red ones for Mano, green for Joanne, blue destinations they agreed on and they were glad to see there more than double the amount of blue than red or green.
#34 - Formal
He fiddled with his tie, uncomfortable in the suit, but his discomfort was forgotten when Joanne floated down the stairs in a silver dress and stole his breath away.
#35 - Fever
For a week and a half he drifted in and out of consciousness, but in the moments of relatively clear thinking the fever allowed, he saw blonde hair and blue eyes and could taste soup and gummy bears.
#36 - Laugh
Her laugh was sweet and he loved it, even when she was laughing at his pain, pain she’d caused him.
#37 - Lies
She sniffed loudly and dried her eyes with his shirt and he sighed- “Honestly, Joey, it’s just a movie; it’s not real.”
#38 - Forever
She often said things that conflicted with what she’d said only days before, and he knew it, but he couldn’t help wishing they were real (don’t worry, I’ll be here forever- I’ll never leave you).
#39 - Overwhelmed
After the school performance, Mano found himself overwhelmed with requests to join his dance classes and was oh-so-glad that Joanne was there to relieve some of the pressure.
#40 - Whisper
All it took was a whisper (shh, George, the neighbours might hear you) and Mano’s heart broke.
#41 - Wait
Fox wasn’t good at waiting, never had been, so of course it was him who found his brother first; lying on his back in the river, unconscious.
#42 - Talk
Lisa hunched over her drink, reciting the lyrics of various songs over and over in an attempt to block out the incessant chattering of her brother’s girlfriend; it wasn’t working very well.
#43 - Search
He had joined the search for Alphonse and Dee the moment he’d heard they’d vanished, and when he stumbled home at five in the morning soaking wet and tired, he’d been surprised to find Joanne sitting awake waiting for him with a cup of Milo and a blanket.
#44 - Hope
Joanne glanced back at the apartment on the fourth floor, easily distinguished from the rest by the flower box at the window; maybe he was standing there, watching as she walked away- she could always hope.
#45 - Eclipse
The moon eclipsed the sun, and she squeezed his hand as the darkness fell; it was so easy to see why other civilisations had treated these moments with reverence.
#46 - Gravity
We couldn’t help it, he explained as his sister ran finger through his hair, it was beyond our control; blame gravity.
#47 - Highway
It cut through the middle of the city, and went on through until it vanished in the glare of the sun; one day, he promised, he’d leave on that road.
#48 - Unknown
The question wasn’t asked, but rather seen and felt- in his eyes, in his movements, on his breath, ghosting over her skin and causing her to shudder with shame because she didn’t know the answer.
#49 - Lock
The locket around her neck swung softly as she moved, catching the sun and sparkling golden in the light; as golden as the memories within it.
#50 - Breathe
Joanne packed the last of her things in her bag, then paused- she ran to the bathroom and grabbed his shower gel, breathing in the comforting scent before gently placing the bottle in her bag; she was determined to remember, no matter what.
