Its long and complicated, but this is the summarized version:
Using his instruments to harness the power in the Aurora Borealis, Asriel cuts the bond between Roger and his daemon, which kills him. The release of energy causes a massive window to be opened through the aurora into a parallel world.
He's not. Well, so far what I've read of him, he's not ... IDK, its complicated, it really depends on your judgment of him, that's why you have to read the books! XD
It's a good scene, but I see why it was cut. The movie's ending would have been too ambiguous . . . especially since there was no certainty (and probably still isn't) that a sequel would be made.

I find it funny how he tells her that she brought him what he needed, and its also sad and oh so good at the same time. XD
But yeah, we need that A/M scene, we need it NOW! :P

I've never read the books and the only reason I know that is because some radio show was talking about the books.

I got that from this site.
You should read the books, they're really good. I'm just starting on the last one, hopefully I'll get it done during this three-week break. :)
