I'm really anxious to hear the supreme courts decision in 45 minutes. I'm concerned about the idea that civil rights can be taken away by a simple majority, wondering what that might mean in the future, and pondering how different that would have made things in the past.

Either way, this isn't over with this decision. But maybe once it's enacted ( Read more... )

I'm not too concerned about the idea of civil rights being taken away by a simple majority, when we already live in a world where they are routinely taken away by minorities with no popular input whatsoever. If it a bad thing to have half the country vote on rights, it is even worse to have 1 person or a group of 9 decide what rights we do and do not have in the first place. Requiring a simple majority to overturn basic rights is something we need to progress to, in my opinion.

Until, of course, someone goes after a right that affects you, something you believe in. Then the tune changes...
