I had a tough day today. I've been talking a lot about violence with my kids. The discussion sort of came about naturally, and I used it to share some of my books with them. I read a book about the LA riots, one about slavery, and one about Hiroshima. The book about Hiroshima is very good, but very sad. It has these stylized and kind of ( Read more... )

It's a tough question. I wonder if you could do some kind of exercise having the kids list differences between fictional violence and real violence on a blackboard or something? But you don't want to scare them, either.

It's just beyond their ability to see how significant it is. The have no real basis for comparision. September 11th is really the most tragic event in their lives that they will use to put things into perspective. I had no basis for WWII or even the Kennedy assasination. Once I got older of course the significance was there for me.
