What have I been up to?

Since the last entry in my livejournal, we have been on 2 more ski trips. Even though there is still lots of snow left, that's the end of the season for us, the snow is getting slushy during the daytime and we've moving on to our summer activities ( Read more... )

Bomb was my first thought too. It didn't occur to me that it might be an alien seed-pod :-)

What kind of foot gear do you use for that? Do you take your shoes
off and wade through it barefoot, do you get your hiking shoes all
wet, or what?

We haven't really settled on what we prefer to do for walking through water like that. At the first crossing (on day 1), I took the ranger's advice and removed my socks, then put my boots back on and crossed in my boots. This resulted in wet boots for the entire 4 day trip. And as soon as I'd put dry socks on, they would get wet again from the wet boots. My boots are waterproof, but not if the water level comes above the top of the boots. And I think because they're waterproof, they actually take longer to dry inside. Since my boots were already wet, I did the remainder of the water-walking with boots and socks on. On previous trips, I have carried Teva-like sandals to cross in. I stopped carrying them because of the added weight to carry, but I may go back to that. My feet are way too sensitive to cross barefoot with a heavy pack on, so that's not really an option for me.

I don't know what "Teva-like sandals" are, but...

Couldn't you just use cheap foam rubber flip-flops for wading? Just enough to protect the bottom of your feet. Those would weigh less than the water retained in your regular boots & socks ;-}

Teva is a brand of sandals that makes sandals that have good treads and are firmly strapped on the front and back of your feet, in a way that really couldn't slip off by accident. But, in my opinion, they are not very light weight.

The issues I've read about with cheap foam flip-flops for wading are stability (we're wearing 35 pound backpacks during this wading, and thigh deep flowing water can have quite a pull) and concerns about them being pulled off by the water currents. I haven't tried them myself so I can't say whether these things would really be problems. But, you're right, they would be the most light-weight option if they worked. My theory is that someday I will make something suitable; not sure if that will ever happen in reality though.
