One of my bosom friends and I undertook a new project two weeks ago tomorrow. We joined the gym and promised each other that we would, in fact, go a minimum of five times per week.
We've been pretty good about it - we've missed a total of 3 out of 10 scheduled gym dates. Okay, maybe we haven't been so good about it. But we've been a lot better than I thought we'd be!
The surprising thing is how much we're enjoying getting up at 5 in the morning so that we can be at the gym when the doors open at 5:30. Why so early? Because of my work schedule, and because she is a stay-at-home mama with three children under four years of age. If we don't get it done before the kids wake up and before I have to start my morning odyssey to the office, it just won't happen.
Also, there's the fact that there are few other people in town crazy enough to get up and go to the gym that early, so 1. we don't have to wait for equipment, or 2. feel shy and awkward about the fact that the gym rat behind us is probably using the lack of muscle tone in my thighs for her daily dose of smugness. I'd just really rather not go there.
We do a great job bouncing out of bed before sun-up during the early part of the week, but it's been the latter part of the week that has proven troublesome. But here's my horoscope for the day, which I take to be a small cosmic sign of encouragement. That, and the fact that in two weeks I've already dropped a pant size. Yay!
"Good news is coming in regard to a health issue today, and it will help clear your mind of a lot of stress and worry that has been crowding your life for the past several days. But this doesn't mean you should slow down on the healthy track you've been going down. Keep eating healthy, keep thinking healthy, and definitely keep exercising! You are on a good track, and there is no reason for you to step off of it now. Keep up the good work -- you will thank yourself for it later."
