These stores already exist, but they aren't in the mall. And you don't hear about them because the rampant celebrity culture currently dominating the United States (and most of the world?) is really just interested in seeing Heidi Klum walk around in her underwear (I'm as guilty of that as the next person...).
Generally, lingerie boutiques will be pricier, but they will be far superior quality craftsmanship, will fit you better, and the experience of shopping for and purchasing your intimates will be significantly less disturbing, and possibly even affirming. (Shop around so you don't wind up in a novelty shop with some bras hanging in the front, though.)
Vicky's cracks me up. I used to think they were the sketchiest place ever and then I started becoming a customer. It's funny - I have never really thought I looked like a model there or wanted to. Nor do I care for objectifying women, which I guess I could argue the ads and atmosphere in the store kind of does. There's a certain type of woman with the underwear model body - and I guess the mentality is that you have to have a pretty knockout physique to be showing so much of it? But their style of body and presentation is almost so over-the-top fake that it doesn't bother me (for better or for worse!)
But I'm glad that it provokes you that the general ambiance of the store and product presentation really is a bit of a sham. Maybe that's Victoria's "secret" - that women want to feel over-the-top glamourous underneath their clothes and be their normal selves on top. That's OK with me.
totally agree that VS has the best bras ever. Except....for moms. One of the brilliant (and not so pleasant some times) side effects of pregnancy for me has been that I basically packed all my old bras away and set out to find new, bigger ones- and figured in the mean time I'd try for a few in the maternity section just to save the mulla. VS has nothing that fits me, anymore (i was already on the top side) and to add insult to injury, they could care less about women in the family way. Not just not nursing bras, but nothing- and strange looks when I walk into the store! ridiculous.
I know there are internet stores out there, ones that totally agree with us, Liz, but Doug's right. They'll never make it into the malls in today's world. When they do finally make it into the real world, I hope they take up shop somewhere close!
