Just before the first of the year, I could run for a minute and a half and was out of breath. Now I can run for a solid five minutes, or 15 if I'm allowed a few walking breaks in the middle. 1) Our brains! The have this property called plasticity which, especially when we're little babies, allows us to reform/recreate neural connections. What does this mean? Basically it is the mechanism by which we learn (which you know from your psych classes), but it's also what allows people who've had trauma to their head relearn coordination. It's what can disprove the theory that "you can't teach an old dog new tricks". Though plasticity decreases with age, you at least still have some...hence why I'm saving my hope to learn piano until I'm 60 ( ... )
