Just before the first of the year, I could run for a minute and a half and was out of breath.  Now I can run for a solid five minutes, or 15 if I'm allowed a few walking breaks in the middle.  In a few more weeks, I should be able to run 25 minutes with no walking, and I hope to do an 8K in March.  I've been jogging about three times a week, and ( Read more... )

Allow me to give you a few more reasons why the body is SO awesome:

1) Our brains! The have this property called plasticity which, especially when we're little babies, allows us to reform/recreate neural connections. What does this mean? Basically it is the mechanism by which we learn (which you know from your psych classes), but it's also what allows people who've had trauma to their head relearn coordination. It's what can disprove the theory that "you can't teach an old dog new tricks". Though plasticity decreases with age, you at least still have some...hence why I'm saving my hope to learn piano until I'm 60 ( ... )
