Do Americans ever say 'tap' or is it always 'faucet'?

It was always faucet for me. Tap is a verb.

Thanks! And would you turn it on or open it?

Never open. Turn it on, twist it (it's often a knob), lift it if it's a lifty one...varies. But definitely not open. Actually I'd say run it. You run a faucet (well, you turn on the faucet and the water runs out but it shortens)
