Okay, so I didn't post about all of this, I don't think, but I found the church that my friend Fr. Andrei (the one from the quote in my last post, in Pskov) is serving at, and then I found out that the church has a website, and I sent a message through the site, and got in touch with him by email ( Read more... )

I need to practice my Russian, too, so you should just call me :)

You should email me your phone number--I think I don't have it. :) Though I think you're pretty busy for the next couple of weeks. Well, email me anyway, sometime.

Does he have a low voice? I find it more difficult to understand foreigners, especially men, who have low voices. I have a hard time everytime I try to speak Hebrew to my friend's husband because he speaks low and fast at the same time. And talking on the phone makes the things worse.

He does have a relatively low voice, and I bet that is part of it--especially since I understand his wife so much better. And you're right, talking on the phone is always more difficult; when I see him in person, I can usually have a good conversation. A few weeks ago, I had a half hour conversation in Russian on the phone and understood almost everything (it was with a man, with a deep voice, too, but maybe he was making an effort to talk really clearly?) so I was hopeful that I had gotten to the point where I could talk on the phone. Apparently not with everyone though. Sigh.

If it's any consolation, I often find it quite difficult to understand my priest over there, unless he's delivering a sermon. I try to avoid phone conversations with him because I'm really out of luck then!

I don't know if it is a consolation or not, because I think your Russian is far better than mine, so I don't know if I have any hope of ever being able to understand!

I do understand sermons really well, generally, in Russian.

Do you mind if I ask where you go to church, in Russia?

Ooo...you probably overestimate my Russian! :-) Really, my oral skills aren't very good and have disintegrated a lot over the past few years. I consider my home parish there to be St. Tikhon's Church in Klin, where Fr. Anatoly Frolov is the rector.

What's up with the idea to work over there? Sounds exciting!

"California" and "telephone" sound real similar.

It's not nearly as bad as the time I asked my phlebotomist, "Ti ukranyetz?"

She looked at me funny, scowled, and gave me an annoyed monotone: "ukranka."

Right. I knew that.

Are you making fun of me about "California" and "telephone" sounding similar? I mean, they sort of do--in Russian especially, at least to me--but I think they are not that close.

I'm laughing at your story though--I know what that's like.

Do you speak Russian then? I don't think I knew that. Or do you only know a little?

Isn't it great? I don't much about it, so I am trying to start very small.
