Produce stands.

Produce stands are the best. I bought 4 peaches, 4 nectarines, 3 plums, and 11 ounces of spinach for $5.30 yesterday. Given current prices, I think this was pretty good.

I don't know if produce stands exist in other parts of the country, they are half outdoor market type buildings that sell fruits and vegetables and occasionally a few grocery items

Nope, not here -- just farmers' markets.

Here farmers' markets, at least the ones I have been to, tend to be much more expensive that produce stands... Though, I know there are some that are cheaper.

Fruit stands in Northern California too, and yes, I love them.

Although, now I just go to the Farmer's Market.

I think you guys must have better farmers' markets down there than we do... are they cheaper than grocery stores? Because here, they often aren't.

Yes, I think so. We also get our produce through a CSA though, so we are usually just supplementing.

But, growing up, my family stopped at fruit stands all the time - I grew up close to the San Joaquin Valley.

farmers markets (shoreline, everett, u district.) no proper produce stands that I can think of. where was this one?

There's lots of produce stands! Well. Some anyway. The one I went to was at 15th and 65th NE, and it's generally quite a good one. And there is also one in Ballard, at the same streets NW. There's one somewhere over Beacon Hill-ish, I think, and one in West Seattle... I'm sure there's more too. You have to know where they are though, they all have different names, and they can be hard to look up.
