Ah yes, me too. though I use a different kind of incense, it is of good high quality and not acrid like most store-bought incence. Nice incence is nice.
I don't like what I think of as store-bought incense at all (the stuff in sticks? I don't know much about it). The scents of most of it makes me feel a little ill.
Orthodox churches use this insense that comes in little nuggets, and you light small pieces of charcoal (sold for the purpose) and then put the incense on top of it. We have frankincense, and a bunch of different florals, most commonly.
I've used pure resins on charcoal before but for easy/fast/beautiful I use Lisn incence. It's a small boutique line made by the Shoyeido incense company. Japanese incense is very pure - it usually does not have poor quality wooden sticks in the middle. Lisn is lovely, refreshing, bright, and not overwhelming. I have to call Shoyeido to make an order, though, because it's impossible to find in stores.
As a second-best I do enjoy some of the lower priced Shoyeido incense; I can usually find it in groovy hippy stores. It's not as nice, though.
Hmm that sounds interesting, and like something I might be interested in for at home--I should look into it! I have a burner and charcoal and stuff, but I rarely do it--I'm not really very good at getting it to work right anyway.
I especially love the incense they use around Pascha that smells like roses. Or maybe I'm thinking of our ancient Plachinitsa, which smells like rose oil.
Although church incense, like most strong scents, has made me ill before.
Isn't it cool how certain smells remind you of certain times of year, or places, or something? There is incense that reminds me of Holy Week, and certain incenses remind me of Russia a lot... it's cool.
I don't think church incense has made me ill, though other incense often does.
I've definitely gotten sick, what with the standing for hours and the incense. I got used to the incense, but standing still is not my friend. I can't usually make it through a service without having to sit at least once. And it has nothing to do with being out of shape, either, I just can't stand.
And now I have to sit most of the Liturgy, or else Gnarly rebels.
I don't know if you're up for adding more friends, but over the past several months I've seen you comment in a couple of my friends' LJs (including that of my sister-in-law, violetvale) and would love to better make your acquaintance, if you're willing.
And if not, then of course, I quite understand! :)
