inappropriate work attire

Yesterday we had a young woman from another department working in our department on a “light duty” assignment (an injury prevent her from doing her usual job). She was wearing Bermuda-length cut-offs and a belly-baring tank top that had some sort of sparkly design or logo on it and thongs. She also had full makeup (i.e. ( Read more... )

was it bad enough for you to file a "hostile work environment" complaint? probably not, if she was only there for one day...

No, I wouldn't consider it that bad. I was more appaled by the cutoff and thongs than anything. and the hairdo and makeup suggested that she had put thought into how she looked. I do realize that some women never go anywhere without the face and hair done to death. My musings were more along the line of "how can you look in the mirror at home and think that this is an OK outfit for work?" A prom dress would have been equally inappropriate on the other end of the scale. And I think the person supervising her must have said something, because her clothes are more approriate now.

I guess we've gone from Casual Friday, to Casual Everyday, to anything goes.

Jeans and t-shirt is still ok here, although the actual librarians usually dress in button-down shirts and trousers. I've stopped wearing my band t-shirts and the like, though, for just the reason you mention: otherwise it seems people don't take me seriously, and I have enough of a problem with that due to my youth, shortness, etc.
