Old entry

Note: this was supposed to have been posted a couple of weeks ago, but popped up as a saved draft. Lahaina means "land of the relentless sun" but I didn't need to go to Lahaina (10 minutes away) to experience the sun in all of it's glory. I spent a couple of hours chilling on the beach this afternoon, reading my book, then enjoying some waves, and now I have a nice bright glow of my own. This brilliant scientist thought her white white skin could handle a couple of hours without SPF. Even the areas I got with spf30 are pink. The other,s like my back, thighs, and stomach, fully expect to blister.

This morning started something like this:
Dad: Are you kids ready yet?
Kids: We're ready for breakfast. What else do we need to be ready for?
Dad: I need to know if you're ready to go!
Kids: We are ready for breakfast. What else are we doing today, and are we going to be able to come back here? We're not ready for anything else but breakfast.
Dad: Turn the TV off! I'll get mad if I have to!
Kids: *pull hairs out*

Turns out we were going to hear what the travel agency had to say about excursions we could take, and they served a nice breakfast before hand. Before we got in, I had a talk with dad, asking him to please stop yelling at us all the time. He told me to stop being so sarcastic. Anyway, the day went better between us after that. Dad still feels picked on and bullied. Says gramma is *insisting* this or that, or that Auntie is *forcing* her opinion on him. Whatever.

Gramma is feelign much better today. We think she may have just overdosed on Vicoden. We went shopping today, first in Whaler's Village (a mistake, it's got only high-end stores) where I bought a shirt to swim/surf in and a shirt to bike in--more on that later--and then hit the stores in Lahaina and visited the biggest Banyan tree in the world. By the time we were done, about 5pm Hawaiian time, it'd been hours since I'd eaten or drank. I was grouchy. We ate at a restaurant on the water (as in, water actually sometimes splashed up onto our table) and chatted with our waitress from Buffalo and learned where to get surfing lessons. It was really good food. But then, I was starving, so it might not have been so nice. The onions (sweet Hawaiian variety) on my burger were tasty anyway.

Took some pics today, post them tomorrow morning. Brother and I are going to go take surfing lessons tomorrow while my dad takes a boat to visit the leper colony one island over. He works in public health, and all his friends have been, so he's real curious.

Tuesday will be the snorkeling excursion. Gramma will get to sit in the glass-bottomed boat to watch the fishies while we stick our faces in the water. Wednesday, Bro, Aunt and I are taking the 38 mile downhill bike ride, for which we need to dress warmly. The travel agent said "Came to Maui not expecting to need warm clothes? No probelm. Just open up your suitcase, and put everything on."  I bought a too-expensive long-sleeved tee in Whaler's Village anyway. That I know I can wear again. The green surf top? Probably only good for this trip, or for the next time I feel like surfing in the wakesnthe ducks in the pond Arboretum in Davis. Although, Sydned did invite me for that boat trip on the 14th....perhaps my blisters will heal by then.

Thus concludes Day Two, here, on The Island.
