dream (save me)
chanyeol/sehun - pg13
character death, lapslock
sehun dreams of the same thing every night

inspired by this post on otp prompts

it doesn’t get easier, even if it’s not the first time this dream plagued sehun in his sleep.

the dream always starts in the same way. the sky is overcast as he runs on the cobbled streets, continuously tripping over himself as he tries to get away from the monsters hot on his heels.

monsters. that’s the only way he can describe the humans who had mutated into a savage version of their original form. their green scales shimmer in a lackluster manner, and sehun shudders to think what that means for him.

“fuck,” he curses under his breath as the distance between him and those monsters close with every stumble he makes.

the streets are deserted, the remaining humans strategically planning any visits they have to make out of their houses only after the monsters’ appetite had been satiated. no one had been killed in the past month, not after the town’s mayor had been ravished by the monsters in a self-sacrificing act. after that, the monsters retreated back to their caves for two days before they started their rampage on the village once again, searching for the next victim. and sehun might be the unlucky one this time round.

he should had never ran out of the house in a fit of anger, but arguments with chanyeol always made him irrational. the first time they argued, sehun broke the very first present chanyeol got him. last year, he threw away their supplies of canned food for the week, and this time round, he might be losing his life over it.

the streets stretch on endlessly, and sehun finds himself gasping for air more frequently. there are only two choices; continue running straight, and hope that he can shake those monsters off his trail, or make a left turn into the residential district and pray that there are pipes he can climb up.

it is impossible for him to outrun those creatures, not when his muscles had degenerated from being cooped up in the house for more than three-quarters of the year. finding pipes to climb sounds like a more plausible choice since those green creatures will not be able to follow him with their webbed feet.

the turn turns out to be most costly decision he had ever made. instead of elevated platforms which he can climb onto, he runs into a dead end.

sehun keeps his body closely pressed to the wall, refusing to turn around as the monsters close in on him. he doesn’t need to see how those creatures raise their claws to tear him apart. the stench becomes unbearable; the smell of saliva mixed with rotten meat raising goosebumps on sehun’s skin as he awaits his demise.

the attack never comes, but instead, sehun hears a shout that he is way too familiar with.

“hey lizards,” chanyeol’s voice quivers despite the smile on his face as he continues shooting at those beasts, “look here instead.”

“chanyeol,” sehun breathes out in fear. chanyeol should be at home, safely hidden behind their metal gates instead of shooting at those critters.

“sehun, i’ll lure them away” chanyeol keeps his eyes trained on the monsters as he orders the other boy, “run home immediately and make sure you lock the door.”

“why are you here?” sehun’s tears threaten to choke him, blurring the scene in front of him as he watches the creatures move towards chanyeol slowly.

chanyeol had always been scared of bugs, or any animals that are particularly aggressive since he was younger. despite being the older of the two, he would always hide behind sehun, whining for the younger boy to protect him from those scary monsters. and yet, now he is facing one of his greatest fears - those mutants that look like the lizards he hates the most.

“i love you,” is his only reply before he shoots himself in the arm.

the effect is instantaneous. the beasts lurch for chanyeol the moment they pick up the scent of blood in the air.

“stay safe, sehun,” chanyeol smiles - in the way that had always managed to blind sehun since they were younger - before running down the street.

the alley clears up immediately, making it easy for sehun to think that this is all part of his dream if not for the blood stains on the floor.

the group is near the end of the streets when he rushes out, and sehun realizes that chanyeol is missing his right arm. chanyeol’s right arm that he leans on when he is sleepy. the arm that always pulls him in closer when he wakes up from nightmares.

go, he sees chanyeol mouthing at him from the distance, not a scream ripped from him as the monsters tear pieces of flesh off chanyeol’s back.

this is not the chanyeol that sehun knew. chanyeol is supposed to be loud and whiny, complaining about every small wound he suffers. he is not supposed to smile at sehun at a time like this.

despite the injuries, chanyeol manages to run into another street, disappearing from sehun’s view. and sehun can’t find any energy to chase after them, knowing that he will see the person he loves the most getting shredded into pieces.

it is all his fault.

the ringing of his phone disrupts the peace within the house, jerking sehun from his sleep.

“sehun,” zitao’s wrecked sobs travel through the earpiece, “jongin…do you still have the guns?”

“what happened?” sehun asks, the shivers intensifying as chanyeol’s face gets replaced by jongin’s.

zitao hiccups; his mumbles through the tears making it difficult for sehun to understand much of what he said.

“zitao,” sehun orders sternly, “speak clearly. i couldn’t help you or jongin if you waste anymore time.”

he doesn’t want to be so harsh on zitao, not when he clearly understands the fear of losing a loved one, but there isn’t any time to be squandered, not when the monsters can detect a human faster than they can get out the necessary supplies.

“jongin… candy disappeared during the night… and jongin… jongin went out to get her.” zitao manages to get out before he breaks into a fresh round of tears.

“i need… i need to borrow some guns from you. we’ve ran out of them since the last raid.”

“okay,” sehun agrees to it readily, even though he only has one left, and not having a gun equates to death in this world.

“sehun, sehun,” zitao murmurs, the once fearless boy sehun knew during his adolescent disappearing along with the threat of death. “what if i cannot find jongin?”

“don’t worry, zitao,” sehun whispers reassuringly, “i’ll get jongin and candy back for you. wait for them at home.”

“wait, sehun,” zitao shouts over the phone, “sehun!”

sehun ends the call before zitao can say another thing. neither zitao nor jongin needs to see their lover being torn into shreds in front of them.

he pulls off the bracelet he had on for as long as he remembers and drops it in the drawer, on top of another identical one.

chanyeol, see you soon.
