I switched one of my testing journals to a Basic account, and confirmed that the 'Show old style Entry page' option appears for Basic users, but doesn't seem to actually work right. It should work the same for all levels, yes. Bug ticket filed, thank you!
I think the behavior of long threads is still something being worked on.
I can't reproduce what you mean about the LJ header going missing with the style settings you selected -- I selected those and I still see the main LJ header, the navbar on my journal/flist, etc. Can you maybe do a screencap of what you're seeing?
I've got one more also to throw at you, and I think it's another "inherited from custom comments" issue.
This is page 2 of this post in the old-style layout. If I want to read the replies to snapelike's comment, I have to manually expand each one, instead of there being an "Expand" link attached directly to the top comment that will affect all replies. This was a function on the old default comments, and is available on the new S1 pages as well; are there plans to fix that for the old-style setting?

Edit: realized it isn't going to work because this comm isn't displaying the old comment style, lol. Will test elsewhere. ;)
