Hi, LiveJournal founder here. I haven't posted here in awhile, but I figured it was time I made an appearance. If you don't remember any of my previous rants over the past seven years or so, the summary is that I hate advertising. Especially punching animated monkeys that slow down my computer and distract me from what I'm reading.

Go ahead with ads. As long as I don't have to see them if I'm perm or paid or free without ads.

Actually, it looks like you WILL see them if you're No-Ad Free.
Notice it makes it explicitly clear that PAID accounts will never see ads.

No-Ads Free would mean that you see no ads on YOUR LJ, but you would see them on the LJs of those who choose to have ads.

Ad money went from like:

1998: tons (when I ran freevote.com)
2002? crap (people got sick of ads and nobody clicked them)
2004? tons (text ads make ads work again, with Google's AdWords)

Not sure of dates. But ads did make a comeback recently.

Also, Artur's Segway cost like 9x more than a vacation. But he's ridiculous like that. :-)

So are you talking about text ads like the ones from google? I was looking for that in the FAQ and you didnt' mention whether they'd be text ones (like from google) or images ones (like from geocities/angelfire).

That really makes the difference.

I don't mind it since I don't view other people's journals very often at all. I'm with you, though - why people would want ads is beyond me.
