illegal and harmful activity

In the comments to Barak's previous post, we've seen many people asking for more detailed clarification regarding the content that would be prohibited under our policy on illegal and harmful activity. We have spent many, many hours discussing these issues with the staff and volunteer team, taking into consideration the points you've raised, and we ( Read more... )

Why is it that the first person to comment on any of these posts is always a brown-noser?

I apologise for my comment above: that was rude and unfair. You're entitled to your opinion, though I admit I don't understand it!

It's okay. *grins* I understand that this is a really sensitive issue for a lot of people, so it's understandable that tempers flare and things are said in haste ( ... )

Thank you. We've been asking for clarification. I'll want to read this when I'm slightly less tired to see if there are other concerns I have that haven't been addressed yet.

No problem -- if I recall, you brought up a great deal of good examples in the previous post, and I *think* they're all things we've taken care of (or at least tried not to catch in this policy's net). *grin*

But content such as "Hitler killed millions of people, and someone should pick up where he left off" or "adults should be allowed to have sex with children" isn't permitted.

OK, this is an issue. Discussion != promotion, realio-trulio, even f I were to state either or both of those as a thesis and discussing it is not. In fact, I'm pretty sure both of those are legal to discuss in the US. It's incitement to commit a crime that's illegal. In other words, I could stand on a street corner and expound, loudly and at length, that 45 year old men from Long Island should be legally permitted to date and sleep with girls in their 12-year-old son's middle school (in reality...ewwww). What I could NOT do was tell someone that "it's OK, that there's no big deal doing that, go ahead, you know she'll like it..." I could say, "Stalin should have killed more people!" but I could NOT say, "Let's go out and kill some wealthy landowners ( ... )

Discussion != promotion, realio-trulio...

Bingo! As usual, the clue train zipped right by and no one at the Six Apart station even tried to flag it down.

Thanks for trying to hard to clear all of this up for everyone.

I'm confused a bit, though. I haven't been paying attention recently, but I thought fan works/fiction weren't included in this? The part about 'real or not' seems like it is. So does this mean that, say, fanfic depicting underage sex is not allowed?

Yes, this is my question as well. Does "real or not" mean, real activity or fantasy involving a 12 year old, or does it mean, fiction or nonfiction (or fanfiction or whatever).

"real or not" refers to both -- whether the events are real or not, or whether the 12 year old is real or not.

So, from now on:

1. Discussion of Romeo and Juliet - banned.
2. Discussion of Lolita - banned.
3. The community pornish_pixies, which Six Apart said before the Permanent Accounts sale was safe - banned.
