Updates to Omniture on LiveJournal

Sep 17, 2007 12:25

Back in January, we announced that we'd start using Omniture SiteCatalyst as the system that lets us dig deeper into how members and visitors use LiveJournal. Back then, we had only used Omniture's tracking ( Read more... )

If the cookie is deleted (say on networked computers etc.) will it be automatically reapplied to the same journal the next time that user logs in or is it on a kind of as needed basis?

It's not a cookie, it's on their end. You have no need to worry about it once you've opted out.

I think.

I didn't opt out, and I don't see any reason to, that's why I was confused. I do however check LJ on my lunch break etc. at work and our system automatically cleans all of our browser history etc. every night so I wanted to make sure that that would mess up their data b/c it if did then I was going to go ahead and opt out. It sounds to me like they are just collecting the data that they need to make the site better and as long as the outside party doesn't have access to my "private information" i.e. entered in the lj store, password, private entries I see no problem.

Actually, if they're tracking where you're going after leaving LJ, then it's a cookie.

Did you just get online??

I adblock most of these things on sites I visit regularly, but they're EVERYWHERE.

OT, but may I respectfully inquire as to the status of the new policy document, as there have been no updates on it in more than a month?

I don't like the data collection, but I like that there's a clear way to opt out. Thanks!

The fact that you can't opt out of this data collection scheme globally and have to opt out from each individual site (and only after they try to send data) is also a problem.

While I'm grateful for the instructions on how to opt-out, the whole venture seems very creepy.

You are aware that almost every site collects this type of data, except often far more invasively and with no opt-out, right?

Well, how do sites know, based on a cookie, what parts of the site are confusing to its users?

Sites collect demographic information and that's not something I have a problem with. But how is this information going to tell LJ/6A about what parts of the sites people are finding confusing? Are they going to look at the path of links people follow? That's not always a good way to do it because people may do things in a specific way.

Are you going to comment to every comment that expresses concern about this with your comment?

Well if it takes people 30 clicks to get to a part of the site, I dare say they will attempt to streamline that.
