...you could subscribe to someone's journal without having to let them view your friends only entries...

Doesn't the new 'Track This' option do the same thing?

That was mentioned in the post...

Technically, you can do all of this already if you use custom filters and edit the "Default View" filter, or use the notification system but that seems like too much work for fairly basic functionality, and we'd like to eventually change it.

Ah, I must have missed that in my state of sleep deprivation. Thanks for pointing that out.

The suggestions system, or, more precisely, the suggestions form could use a re-working. It has always seemed skewed towards techie types who already understand how LJ works and know what a given feature needs to function - or they at least have some idea of this. But the fact is, most LJ users, and most users who submit ideas, have no idea. The average user doesn't know how a feature should be implemented, and as a result, more and more suggestions just have "well, uh, code it" in the last section. I'll admit that I don't know what to put there half the time either, even being semi-techie and very involved in LJ. The submit form also gives this air of... rigidness and officiality. A little friendlier, laid-back tone wouldn't hurt. :)

Perhaps that section could be made optional? I wouldn't remove it altogether, since some people may be able to put something useful there. (useful being loosely defined as covering the range from sketchy ideas all the way to "here's a patchset that does exactly that on my LJ clone")

Yes! It's that whole 'suggestions for implementation' bit that completely stops me from submitting suggestions. Because I'm not at all techy - I have no clue about coding, and so I couldn't even begin to suggest how to implement it. And surely now, with the extra resources that are available since 6A took over, we shouldn't need to point developers in the right direction. Just sayin'.

The process of suggestions isn't difficult in itself. But it's the info that's asked for that stops me submitting.

The form generator's about to get an overhaul.

As far as splitting the "friending" up like you mentioned, that pretty much is already a possibility with communities, so why is it not just the same code to do it with individuals?

I put this in as a question but then realized I put it in too late, so since the topic has been sort-of addressed here, I'll just throw it in here too:

efbq asked -- When will I be able to rename 'friends' and 'friend of' on my info page?

Speaking of that, namely, on International Talk Like A Pirate Day everything on the site was changed, including the "friends" being changed to "mateys" and "member of" changed to "crew member of" and such...dearest Elljay, you don't suppose you could make that one standard option for one's journal, could you? Just put it in the "manage journal" section or sommat as "normal view" or "arrrrr! view" or something? Because that pirate-y theme would also solve the "friends" being called "friends" issue, in that "mateys" connotes more "people on my ship" than "my best friends" and it's...well... piratey! Sort of a win-win.

*begs shamelessly* Arr?

Yes! I luuurved all the pirate-themed field changes. I would love to have that as an option year-round.

I think that LJ did this with the code that handles what language the site displays in (UK English didn't have the pirate text as soon as US English did, I know). So if they were to reinsert the pirate stuff exactly as they did before, they'd have to make ()English - US and ()English - US pirate, or something.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong about how the pirate theming was accomplished.

Yes, that's how it was done - simply changing the terms in the en_LJ (American English) translation. Other translation teams had the option of participating if they wanted to.

Evil bunny? HAHA! That's great. I think you should adopt Bessy the Cow. I hear her contract with the dairy farmers is up.

Or maybe Maxine the Cow, since Maxis seems to have lost all love for the dear bovine.

I heard she came to interview but LJ/6A had a problem with her past.
