Indication of Custom Friends Groups on Entries

Feb 08, 2008 12:48

Hi guys! One feature that many of you have wanted for a very long time is some indication when entries are posted to custom friends groups. Right now, these entries show the normal Friends-only lock icon, so neither the poster nor the viewers of the entry know that the entry is filtered (the poster can find out by editing the entry, but not by ( Read more... )

Personally, I think that the ability to see the name of a custom filter group should be an option that can be set when creating said filter group.

Then, if you choose that the name shoudl not be displayed, it could show a generic "Custom filter" rather then the actual name.

Hm, that would be a rather happy third-way option.

I agree. Definitly a good compromise.

I like this idea. Usually, I simply label my LJ Post title, e.g., [Chicks Only!], [Health], etc. In some cases, though, where I've created a filter group that the people on it don't necessarily need to know the name I've given that group, I'd prefer that they not be able to see it.

However, an option for me to choose to display the filter name would be handy-- either as a post-by-post selection option, or an option when setting up the filter.

I would actually prefer a third option. Having an icon that shows that it is filtered without seeing what the name of the filtered group is.

I was about to make this very comment. The one above, where the poster can set "show the name" or "show only that it's filtered" is a good one, too.

I for, for one, as well as many on my flist, usually start my filtered posts with '[FilterName] Post Name', and explain the filter if needed at the top of the post. Allowing anyone to see would save a step in creating the post.

I do mine in asterisks after the post subject. Like Daily Consciousness *Public*

Whatever I put in between *and* is how the post is made, public, friends, or the name of a custom group. So generally the people in that group know the filter name anyway.

I do that with mine, too. Personally, I like the idea of people knowing what filter- that way, if I post something very personal on a top secret filter, but then post some normal friends-only posts, my friends know "hey, if I want to ask her how things are going with ___ from the top secret filter, I should go back to that entry (or another entry with that filter) to ask."

This is exactly what I do, because otherwise it's a Serious Pain In The Butt for -me- to figure out what friends group I posted to.

Clearly, if I'm -already- doing this where any of the people in the group can see it, I have no problem with them continuing to be able to see it.

I rarely post to more than one friends group at a time, so that's not an issue for me.

Heck, for that matter, I often -tag- posts by the friends group that can see them.

It should be settable on a post-by-post basis.
And it would be useful if there was a way to expand who was in the groups, if the groups are public. I might not know who-all my friend has on which groups.

Yes. This helps your friends avoid the faux pas of mentioning something you saw on a filtered post to a mutual friend who is not on that filter! It would be good to have a palette of icons for different groups, and the opportunity to upload new ones.

Sometimes I want people to know what the filter(s) is(are), and sometimes I don't.

I agree strongly with people IN a filter being able to see who else is in that same filter. So they know who they can talk to and who they should not.
