popularity on livejournal

LiveJournal is primarily a journaling site, rather than a social networking site, and so it's interesting to note that there's a different way of judging who the "popular" "influential" users are. I know that there aren't many people who are universally recognized, but I'm sure you can all think of someone who's highly respected in your group of ( Read more... )

The only popular persons I know on LJ are popular because of the pictures they post.

* What makes someone popular on LJ? e.g. photography
* What makes someone highly-respected within a certain group? good photography
* What attributes make someone well-known? (Either in a positive or a negative way) being a scene girl or something

In case you care, I wrote the book (or at least two widely-linked posts) on gaining popularity on LJ:

The Compleat Guide To LiveJournal Stardom and Fame (plus the followup Whoring For Comments and the serious advice on How To Avoid Psychodrama).

I don't follow my own advice all the time, since being obsessed with the popularity will lead to madness, but it's a decent start.

Haha, I know I've mentioned them, and you traced them back to me and actually commented on the thread.

Haha those were great. The "write as if people don't you" tip is GOLD and is key to a good journal. I always say - I do comment & pay attention... Provided i can work out what the hell you're writing about.

I'll be honest, I actually took that first post there to heart when I was just starting out. I still do some of the things on the list, like "Write As If Your Audience Didn't Know You," "Friend Everyone," although some of the steps had to go by the wayside as the journal got kind of big. I can't read or comment on other people's journals as much as I'd like; it's enough work to keep up with the comments on my own.

I never heard of her, though I did Google to find out the story. I think Kaycee Nicole is a MUCH better-known example of that phenomenon, though she wasn't on LiveJournal.

Doing something notorius in a popular place, like a popular feed or community. If people see your name enough, they'll remember it. Such as jassa.

I want to be LJ popular!

But I guess people who are popular are those who contribute a lot to LJ-writing development. Mostly layout designers (make templates) or icon-makers. Each fandom will also have their BNF (big name fan) and that person would probably garner a lot of popularity.

Of course there are just people who are plain quirky or kinky and intriguing to read. And there are those who just have nice pictures.

For me, the true mark of popularity is when a random stranger gives you a paid account. And the rest of us just have to succumb to buying it for ourselves. x______X
