Hiding CProd Boxes

May 13, 2006 22:33

Some people dislike the new CProd boxes, but there's currently no way to permanently disable them. (Yes, you can say "Don't show me this again", but that won't prevent new ones from popping up when they become available, if I understand correctly.) So here's a guide to remove the CProd boxes that show up while you're doing stuff; http://www.Read more... )

I haven't the faintest idea what these "Cprod" boxes are.

Which... well, if I don't know what they are they're probably not bothering me, but please sate my curiosity and explain them.

THanks for the info. One of my main points in telling people to do LJ is there are no ads, internal or otherwise on a paid account, which is super-cheap compared to other online memberships. It's nice to know we can get rid of the new ones. :)

Note that this script doesn't get rid of ads. Using or providing ad-blocking is currently against the TOS.

It only gets rid of the CProd boxes found on these pages.

Yeah, well I don't have any ads other than the CProds, anyway. :)

The Greasemonkey script works great, thanks for posting it! Those box things were kind of getting on my nerves...

I figured most lj_nifty folk probably already knew what the CProds said and watched the relevant feature announcement communities, so they didn't quite need them like the regular Joe Blow.

I'm glad it works for you!

Since I do all my editing of those things via client, I hadn't encountered them. Sometimes the changelog noise drowns out the signal.

Firefox:

There's an extension called Stylish that lets you apply CSS styles only to sites of your choosing. just applying CSS, I prefer it to userContent.css or Greasemonkey because it's more accessible than userContent.css, allows you to specify which site(s) you want to use that particular rule on like GM, but it doesn't have the slowdown/slight lag that GM does.

IE6:

I didn't test the procedure you gave above, but I've used the stylesheet feature for troubleshooting before, and that sounds about right (still untested, but it might reassure you a bit :))

With regards to your 4th point:
Restarting IE is not necessary, but changes to the stylesheet will only be applied to windows that are opened after the stylesheet was saved. Force-refreshing will not apply the changes to windows that are already open.

PS. I don't know if it's just me, but IE couldn't detect my stylesheet when the path to my user stylesheet had spaces in it.

Stylish is nifty, so I've added some instructions on how to use the hack with Stylish. Thank you for letting me know about it!

When I get the chance to get on a Windows computer, I'll try to test out those IE6 pointers, more thanks!

Funny, I was going to tell you the same thing!

I finally had a chance to test it out, and I was wrong. It wasn't the spaces in the path that caused the problem; it was the lack of a !important declaration in the user stylesheet, which I needed to override the style when it had already been set by the site :)
