How to Turn Snap On and Off

It's easy to disable Snap on your Live Journal -- just click on the gear icon in the upper-right corner of any preview and select the "Disable" option.

You could also go to the Snap FAQs to turn Snap off globally, for all websites. (For best results, clear your cache first ( Read more... )

Attempting to disable snaps in OPERA@USB crashes the browser very consistantly. Fuck you very much 6apart.

I suppose I could also just start using myspace or facebook.

At the risk of sounding like a complete idiot, I kind of like the new Snap feature. But then, I am a complete amateur in these matters. Seriously, it never occurred to me that people wouldn't like this. Meanwhile I'm all, "Oh! Neat!"
*feels like a dork*

It is kind of neat, but it can cripple you if you're on dial-up. It makes life difficult for the visually impaired, too.

Also, if you're reading a post with a lot of links and you're not careful with your mouse, you get unexpected pop-ups all over the place that block what you're trying to read.

What I would really like is a right-click-only preview option -- no pop-ups if you just casually mouse over the link, but if you go out of your way to right-click on a link, you can choose to see a graphic preview.

I don't think Snap offers that, though.

And you know why that won't happen? Because it makes sense. :P

Please give an LJ-side (not Snap-side) option to disable it across all of LiveJournal. Disabling it for just my journal is not very helpful when I look at other people's stuff.

And since I have my browser set (for security and privacy reasons) to disable third-party cookies, I was unable to reliably disable it Snap-side until going to the Snap FAQ and clicking on their javascript toggle link there.

Er, yeah, this is lj_nifty, not news or featureannounce or whatever. Maybe I should've directed this "Please give" to an actual LJ-owned community. Sorry.

Yeah, as far as I know there is no LJ-side way to disable it. You can email LJ directly; I know there's a feedback email, but I don't remember what it is off-hand. (No time to look it up right now, food's burning in kitchen, Ack!)

The feedback email is feedback at lj. You can also try posting to suggestions, as that's essentially the official place where you can ask for things to be changed.

Wouldn't AdBlock Plus block the request to their servers?

There's also NoScript, although that does get tricky for normal folk.

Phew, that's what I thought, but sometimes I am wrong about these things, so I just wanted to make sure!

Maybe you were thinking about GreaseMonkey? That can sort of pretend to block things, but it really doesn't guarantee the server won't be contactable.

i've hated this crap since the moment i first saw it. it worries me to think about the exploits possible with it (and already in it), so it's nice to know there are people thinking about how to do away with its forcible introduction.
