LiveJournal gives you a method to ban users from commenting on your journal, without removing them from your friends list. There's no indication to the banned user, until they try to post a comment. Then, and only then, LJ indicates the user has been banned by disabling the check box to comment with your own id: ( Read more... )

Why not simply "unfriend" those who've banned you?

A fair question. Maybe it's a community or journal in which you're still interested, even if you can't leave comments.

This is nifty. However, it would actually be more nifty if I were banned from a lot of journals. ;)

Good question, and you have to be banned by some journal somewhere just to test it properly.

It would be -really- great if it worked ... oppositely?

So if I ban people in -my- journal, I run a script that remembers -them- and gives them those things. But I doubt that's possible.

Yeah, but there isn't much left about LJ that's new or cool or undiscovered, so all we get anymore are greasemonkey scripts. :P

i'm still waiting for the implementation of my friend-of page idea. that way, when my friends list isn't enough for me, i can read all the people who list me.

Sounds like you're looking more for the way to ban the comments. That's here. This script is for the person you've banned, so they don't bother trying to comment anymore. Of course, this script would probably prevent the banned user from commenting anonymously too, even if you don't block anonymous comments. After the ban is set, you won't hear anything from the banned user again. No comments, no friend/unfriend notifications, nothing.

You're looking for something more along the lines of this.

Does it tell you who you've been banned by if you aren't looking at their journal or comment pages? I always wondered if there was a way to randomly tell who had banned me.

That's on the "to do" list. It wouldn't be too hard to write a script that scanned your friends list, created a browser object, and "tried" to post to each journal (without actually submitting the test comment), then recorded the results. I suspect it would take awhile to run, though.
