MultiLJ - A Multi-Window LiveJournal Client

Jun 23, 2008 09:41

I've just released a new LiveJournal client for Windows, called MultiLJ. Its defining feature is that the user can open as many windows as they need - journals, profiles, post editors, and so on - and they will be hosted internally within the program. There is no dependency on the user's default browser, nor is the user limited to writing only one ( Read more... )

Does this allow one to be logged into multiple LJ accounts at once?

I like your LJ icon.

Also, me and my horde of sockpuppets also want to know the answer to this question.

Thank you. It's totally gankable if you want.

The short answer is no. The long answer is that I'm not sure how the protocols would allow being literally being logged onto more than account. Now, one thing that is theoretically possible under the protocols (for example) is to send in a post under one username, and then send it in under another username. But that could get potentially messy.

Make sense?

You didn't state what operating system it's for; after several clicks I found it's MS Windows. You might want to edit the post to make that more clear, since people use a variety of operating systems here.

Sorry - bad programmer, no biscuit for me.

However, all is not lost. I'd be particularly interested in finding out whether MultiLJ would work on an Intel-based Mac, using Boot Camp, Parallel Desktop, or VMware. As for Linux, I have no idea what the state of the art is regarding Wine, but I'd be curious to know how it reacts to the .NET framework. If anyone wants to take a shot at those platforms and get back to me, I'd much appreciate it.

I'm sure it would work on a Mac using one of those programs; nearly everything does. However, the cost (esp. including the copy of Windows itself) and awkwardness mean that people are only going to go that route if there's a really important app they need that won't run in Mac OS. I think typically that's either some mandatory enterprise or niche app, or a PC game that hasn't been ported. There are already several LJ clients on the Mac, so no offense, but I don't see anyone booting up Windows just to run a different one. (Also, Windows UI conventions like MDI tend to alienate Mac users.)

If you used RealBASIC, your app would be portable between Mac/Windows/Linux; but I'm sure the APIs are very different than .NET.

I have a Mac G5, and I've looked over what's available for Macs regarding LiveJournal clients, and frankly, none of the current ones were comprehensive enough for my tastes. Of course, having said that, MultiLJ is still something of a work-in-progress, but at least my basic concept is in place. I didn't develop for the Mac for two related reasons: one, because I have no experience or tools for developing under the Mac, and two, I'm a Windows developer (with a little bit of Python thrown in for fun...).

Incidentally, the LiveJournal protocol wouldn't differ between the two platforms - it's agnostic as far as that's concerned, which is good. A programmer can pick whatever platform they want and the LJ API won't change.

I would tend to second the request that you mention this is not for Mac. I was slightly disgruntled (though not surprised) to find it was Windows only after hunting don the site.

On a completely unrelated note, I thunk I know you from Chicago fandom, yes? I was an old friend of Janet Caires'...

Too bad I don't have an Intel-based Mac. I've got a G5, otherwise I'd consider the proposition of seeing what people want in a Mac-based client.

Yes, I'm in Chicago fandom, known as Raven (raven_ap_morgan). I knew Janet fairly well, know wendyzski, and produced John Wiseman's (jcw_da_dmg) solo CD, Simply Entitled.

This is totally orthogonal to your announcement post, but my RSS reader didn't grab the update where you mentioned you're developing for windows so I came to look ( ... )

I have a copy of XJournal on my Mac. I have to agree on your remark.

Regarding the Mac situation, there was one point that I had the Apple development kit installed on my G5. I never really got around to doing anything with it, and besides, my Mac is primarily used for music recording and the people that make that software recommend that that machine should be a dedicated machine. So I ended up doing an uninstall.

But given the outright clamoring for a good Mac-based client, I may well change my mind on the matter. I certainly have the time on my hands to do it. But as I said, I'd like to at least get MultiLJ up and running first, since I'm committed to that now.

Trust me, note has been taken.
