Serissa's are hard to grow, especially as your first bonsai. Very pretty plants but quite finicky. My first bonsais were both serissa's and they both kicked the bucket, sadly :( They like lots and lots of humidity and warm places. I'm thinking that a "Humidi-Grow" tray might be a good idea with that in mind, although I haven't heard of them before...

I keep my Serissa in a warm place in our bathroom, it seems happy there. I'd guess it gets a fair amount of humidity from people having showers/baths so I don't use a tray.

I'm from the UK, so I don't think I'd be able to help much with regard to food brands. I use a ready formulated brand of bonsai food though.

There is a very good, basic book for beginners, and at a very low price. You can find it here: http://orlandobonsai.com/store/product_info.php?cPath=31&products_id=78
