I grow Crepe Myrtles outside for landscaping. They're very hardy, drought tolerant, and have no problems handling Southeast Tennessee heat and humidity. Around here, they're like kudzu....they are hard to kill.
I would treat the bonsai similarly, keeping it outside, well watered (if possible), and protect it from very cold temps in the winter. To keep it small, you'll have to prune often, I think, and make sure the root system gets trimmed every couple of years to prevent it from being root bound and to keep its growth rate slow.
I'm no bonsai expert but I'm learning as I go along. It's definitely an art that we develop over our entire lifetimes!
