I picked up a "mallsai" ficus from the home depot two days ago, because it was hidden away on a table with all the cacti near the ant/roach spray. when you touched it, leaves would fall off. i felt bad for it and it was only $10, so i took him home to try to nurse him back to health ( Read more... )

it depends on where you live, but i wouldnt keep it outside. if you do, make sure it is in a well shaded place. i live in texas and have to keep mine where its shady 90% of the day.

as for the leaves, have you seen any small bugs? (if so you need insecticidal soap) and how often are you watering?

im not very experienced, but next time you see a sick tree at home depot, talk them down on the price. $10 is too much for a sick tree, that they grew off a cutting anyway.

i live in atlanta. my balcony is north-west facing and never gets direct sunlight due to a massive bradford pear tree. since it's 60% humidity outside, i thought it might be best, so i'm not constantly fussing with it and maybe harming it more.

i looked over the tree and didn't see anything crawling about. just those weird cream colored lumps that i've since picked off.

i've only watered it once since i've gotten it because under the rocks, the soil was more than a bit damp, and i waited until the soil felt fairly dry on top to water again.

the oily spots on the leaves may be the water they use. The water may have impurities or fertilizer that once the water evaporates. the impurities or fertilizer is left behind. There are two ways to figure this out. One, you already cleaned off the leaves. If the spots some back, it's either a disease or your watering habits. The easiest way is to go back to the home depot and look at thier other plants. Do the other plants have the same spots? yes? then it's likely to be the watering habits because most diseases will not affect EVERY type of plant ( ... )
