On my planet, there are altars and then there are shrines (which everyone else calls altars). According to Wikipedia, they're basically the same thing anyway, so everyone's right!
My altar is where I lay my ritual bits out for a circle. I don't have a permanent altar table right now, so I'm using my Ritual TV Tray (yes, that's really what I call it). I hope one day to have a lovely altar table from my HP. ::crosses fingers::
My shrine is currently laid out in the den.
On the left are my God items: A statue of Silenius & Dionysis (because I think the God as directly involved nurturer is greatly lacking in paganism) A little marble skull incense holder (for the Lord of the Dead. I put stalks of wheat in the holes for extra symbolism.) A Green Man plaque (cos who doesn't love a Green Man?) A Spiral Lord (for that modern, extra-generic touch) A beige marble Hotei (my grandmother always had a Hotei in the house, even though she was a whacked out Pentacostal. Don't ask me how that works

Thank you for bringing this topic up! Even though what I use the altar for is probably very different than what you use the altar for, I do find the topic very interesting. I do feel your pain about getting kicked out of your own space. I live in an apartment so my space is small to begin with but when family comes to visit that usually means I'm on the couch. But what can you do? You've got to love family, right

My altar is on top of my dresser, I would post a picture, but, I do not know how on here. So, I will describe it the best I can. My dresser is on the northeast wall, on the wall is my Native American collection. I have an embroidered picture of dream catchers right above the altar & above that is a picture of an Indian maiden, which is my Goddess. To the right of this is a small dream catcher & a Mandala with a painting of a warrior, eagle & wolf on it, this is my God

thank you, it's always nice to hear about how other people use their altars. it's not a situation that has really worked out and i am residing in my parents house temporarily. perhaps it sounds bad to abandon my boyfriend to his crazy parents but in all honesty, i'm just not crazy enough to do that to myself.
i don't think that i am afraid that people will not respect my beliefs it's just i enjoy having it there when i wake up and go to bed.
