My mom described a similar reaction when she first went to visit my dad's family. The common joke is that every spouse hates his/her mother-in-law, but my mom was always very proud of what a good relationship she had with my dad's mother and how accepted she had been.

It's heartwarming to know I'm not the only one who's gone through this. I have a much better relationship with my in-laws than with my own father, too, and it's so weird and so natural at the same time.

It was definitely an interesting juxtaposition. These past two weekends have been an emotional rollercoaster, and in the meantime my thesis review date approaches. Suspense!
