There's a pretty good Matrix fanfic site: www.theconstructfic.org
And although The Animatrix doesn't really deal with the original characters, it offers some insight into The Matrix. If you're a hardcore Matrix fan I would suggest buying it. But if you just wanna stick to the Trilogy then rent it. After seeing it you decide you want it then buy it. It's pretty good, I'm not the biggest Anime fan but it was still pretty awesome. I LOVE "Final Flight of the Osiris" it's definitely my fave. I was hoping the "Second Renaissance" would clear up a few things, but it didn't really. Oh well...C'est la vie!
I'm not much of an anime fan either, but some of the stories look pretty interesting from the trailers I've seen. But trailers are designed to make you want to buy stuff, so I wasn't sure.
The trailers are pretty good. I bought it just for "Final Flight." There's a really cool story about Trinity in there, and it also has "Kid's Story" which is the story on how that kid obsessed w/ Neo got freed. All the others are quite interesting. I would suggest just renting it and then deciding for yourself it's worth it. Since everyone's taste is different, I can't tell you whether or not you'd enjoy it.
Coming from the Harry Potter and LotR sections at ff.n (affectionately known amongst my friends as 'the pit') I'm fairly sceptical about the sort of fic you can find there. I'll probably end up checking it out, but cautiously.
The Animatrix is significantly better then the second and third movies of the actual trilogy. Becuase of this, i suggest you rent and/or purchase the Animatrix now.
