heylittleriver gave me "Aliens try to invade Earth via a retirement village" so I present to you:
Hostel Intent
The 25-Word Treatment
A quiet retirement village is upturned when the threat of alien invasion spurs the residents to suspect one another of being an alien in disguise.
Setting
Whispering Pines Retirement Hostel in Pontypridd, Wales
Fairly close to the present, perhaps a few years in the future
Alan Rickman as Dr. David Hudgins
David is a retired biologist who spent much of his career analyzing and documenting exotic species brought back from the Amazon and other remote places. He’s a quiet fellow but not reclusive and enjoys spending time with his friends at Whispering Pines, particularly the new and mysterious Jane. He’s also an accomplished dancer; he and his wife enjoyed taking classes together before she passed away. He moved to Whispering Pines a few years after her death for a change of pace; his daughter wasn’t too thrilled that he moved all the way to Wales but was relieved that he didn’t ask to move in with her. She visits occasionally with her son, who wants to be a doctor, and David enjoys talking biology with the boy.
William Daniels as Dr. Ralph John Knox “Kip” Polk
Kip is a retired college history professor. He is American but has split his time between the States and the UK ever since his grad school days when he was researching his doctoral thesis in the bowels of the Bodleian Library. When he finally retired, he decided to stay in his beloved Britain and chose Whispering Pines because it was the first hit when he googled retirement communities. He’s a very friendly man and one of the more outgoing residents. He’s been divorced for longer than he was ever married and while he keeps up with his kids, they’re not particularly close.
Peter Davison as Dr. Clarence Wood
Dr. Wood (he doesn’t like being called “Clarence”, preferring either “Wood” or just “Doctor”) was a cardiac surgeon for twenty years before retiring. Realizing that a quiet retirement wasn’t for him, he went to work again, this time as a librarian. It was probably in the library that he picked up the tendency to see government conspiracies everywhere, particularly regarding anything to do with aliens. Like David, he tends toward the quiet side but can be quite vociferous if you get him talking about government cover-ups and alien invasions. His friends don’t mind too much, but tend to tune him out when he gets going. He is still happily married but his wife is not in good health and doesn’t leave their room much, so he spends most of his time with his other friends at Whispering Pines.
Morgan Freeman as Samuel Mwangi
Samuel is a successful author, drawing on his experiences as a young man in colonial Kenya to write both fiction and nonfiction. He moved to Whispering Pines in an attempt to find new sources of inspiration as he began having difficulty thinking of new stories to tell. In his spare time, which seems to be ever-increasing, he enjoys cycling and has actually competed (and performed respectably) in the World Senior Games. For a writer, he’s remarkably down-to-earth and provides a nice counter to Dr. Wood’s conspiracy craziness. He never married.
William Russell as James Andrews
James is a retired missionary, as much as a missionary can ever retire, that is. He spent most of his adult life in Papua New Guinea translating the Bible and telling people about Jesus. He would have stayed there longer, but between the organization, his wife, Barbara, and his son, Alan, he was convinced that it was time for him to retire to a new mission field: Whispering Pines. His wife died soon after they moved to Whispering Pines but Alan comes to visit occasionally, though not as often as James would like. James is the friendliest man imaginable and loves to serve his friends in any way he can find. He also leads a weekly Bible study for anyone interested; most people come because they want something to do or just because they like James, but that doesn’t bother him.
Helen Mirren as Jane Davies
Jane is the newest addition to Whispering Pines, and that’s about all anyone knows about her. She keeps to herself, though David is trying hard to draw her into his group of friends. At first, her reserve and mysterious lack of a past leads to suspicion but later the group discovers that, rather than being the alien invader they fear, she is a veteran of the last alien invasion fifty years ago (the existence of which Dr. Wood is thrilled to discover is real). Bitter and disillusioned, she created a new identity and moved to Whispering Pines in an effort to escape the constant calls from various agencies to consult or lecture. She is less than thrilled to discover that the alien threat has followed her to Whispering Pines but her experience will prove invaluable to the group as they try to identify the threat.
John Simm as Alan Andrews
Alan works for an agency in London that investigates paranormal activity, but he tells people he’s a loss adjuster for Lloyd’s. He spent a little bit of time in Papua New Guinea with his father as a child, but for the most part grew up in boarding school in Manchester. He doesn’t blame his father for this as such, but he does often wonder what his life might have been like if things had been different. He’s a highly competent investigator and rather addicted to his job.
Paul McGann as Ian Cooper
Ian is the director of Whispering Pines and gets along quite well with most of his residents, who see him as kind of an adopted son. He’s a fairly normal guy but he does fancy himself something of an amateur detective, so leaps at the chance to help find an alien among his residents. He’s enthusiastic, sometimes bordering on manic, but when crisis strikes he can keep a cool head.
The Pilot and Broad Strokes Plot Outline
The pilot begins with Alan (John Simm) investigating an anomaly that’s turned up somewhere in eastern Wales. Their sensors aren’t precise enough to narrow it down any further but given a history of paranormal activity in and around Cardiff, he decides to start there. A brief scan of Cardiff turns up empty so he decides to check in on his dad in Pontypridd since he’s so close.
Alan arrives at Whispering Pines and meets Ian (Paul McGann) who, after a brief chat, sends him off to see his father. Alan arrives in the middle of James’ (William Russell) weekly Bible study and so meets his father’s core group of friends: David (Alan Rickman), Kip (William Daniels), Dr. Wood (Peter Davison), Samuel (Morgan Freeman), and Jane (Helen Mirren). While he’s chatting with everyone, his paranormal scanner starts going crazy, lighting up and beeping and generally being very obvious. Muttering something about being paged, he steps out to see what it’s trying to tell him and sees that whatever it’s sensing is giving off-the-charts readings. Briefly forgetting his father, he heads to the front desk to ask Ian if anything strange has been happening or if anyone new has turned up lately. Ian says it’s been pretty normal but they have had a new arrival: Jane. Alan looks her up on his handy portable database and discovers that Jane Davies does not appear to have existed until six months ago. Ian is intrigued by his devices and so follows him back to his father’s room.
*waves hands* stuff happens *waves hands* somehow the group finds out that Alan thinks an alien is in Whispering Pines *waves hands*
The group, naturally, suspects Jane, despite David’s protestations to the contrary. Dr. Wood is very excited by the prospect of a genuine alien invasion, and at Whispering Pines, no less! They set about trying to discover if Jane is, in fact, the alien. David tries to obtain and analyze a sample of her DNA (he kept a fair bit of his old equipment, just for fun) - which, of course, results in him having to kiss her. Meanwhile, Kip uses his contacts at the Bodleian to try and find out more about Jane’s history. Dr. Wood points him to a few historical events that have been staples of the conspiracy community. Samuel…does more in later episodes, I promise.
Eventually, there is a grand confrontation and Jane reveals that she is not an alien; in fact, she fought the aliens when they last tried to invade, fifty years ago. (David, of course, is five minutes late to this meeting with the results that Jane is, in fact, human). Dr. Wood is very excited to find out that he’s been at least partially right all these years, but everyone else’s main concern is: If Jane’s not the alien, then who is? Alan confirms that the alien is definitely at Whispering Pines and so the quest beings to discover the alien before it can do any harm.
Ensuing episodes consist of the group investigating their fellow residents to determine who the alien is, learning more about the previous alien invasion from Jane, and teaching each other fun things (David holds dance classes, Samuel holds writing workshops, etc). Eventually they learn that the aliens aren’t malicious but simply want to learn about our culture and communicate with us…
