Review for journeyofpain

Sep 20, 2002 22:22

My Review for journeyofpain.

As there was little content to this LJ, very little was required to clear it from my 'to do' list. This is a journal that could easily qualify for a number of Dan's awards.

WRITTEN REVIEW. What are your first impressions of the journal? What did you like? Not like? How do you think things could be improved? Overall what did you think of the journal?

My first impression was that this could not be a real journal. My overall feeling is summed up well by another's comment to an August post.

Considering the journal is listed as being created in the evening 1st August 2002 and her request to ljreview was made only three hours later while her bio claims that she's 'new to Live Journal', it is extremely difficult to take this review request seriously. If not created to target this particular community, then it is likely to be an attempt at parody on the generic wannabe American teen goth.

That such is the intention is strengthened by this post following encounters with a number of people who were seeking to give her some sound advice on the Goth life style she appears to aspire to.

I am gonna be goth like all the nic egoth people who leave goth comments on my goth LJ to tell me I'm goth!!!!!!!!!!! I'm goinna call people SWEEEEETIE and be condescending!!!!!!!!!!

I had a lonh talk with Trsytynm today.

JUDY: We should go out.
TRYSTYN: Um....
JUDY: I love you!!!
(He hangs up)

He's soooooooo shy! I LOVE YOU BIUNCHES, TRYSTYN!!!!!!!!!

I dyed my hair bright pink today. How goth am I? Ooooh yeah!!!!!!!! Just like Christina Agulera!!!!!!!

Well that's the way to integrate into a community if you are what you say you are. The journal quickly loses its novelty value and becomes tedious. Rather than pass this on to another reviewer, I shall I'll score it anyway.

User Info (8 points) 2 points each

1. Can you contact the user easily? Do they have email? Messenger services? Email and 1 messenger though doubt AIM allows that sort of capitalization (1 point)

2. Are interests listed? Yes, 87. (2 points)

3. Do they have user pictures? Enough, too few? Has 3/3 as paid user. (2 points)

4. Do the pictures reflect the user, are creative, original? Do they keep with the style of the journal?

3 user pics extending the theme of angst ridden teenager though created in bright colours. Even though the journal is a mess of colours, they still manage to clash. (1 point)

Biography (4 Points)

Does the biography tell about the user? Is it descriptive, creative, well thought out? Are images included within the biography OR Is it customized in any special way that makes it stand out (customized fonts, color, links)? Does the biography provoke interest to read the journal?

Some poetry to make a Vorgon wince and some pictures from a joke Goth site. She writes:

I am sixteen years old in this world, but in my own time I was an immortal queen goddess of VAMPYRES. Some people call me Judy, BUT THEY ARE THE LIVING. My name is LUCRECE.

OK. Well I've seen worse. It actually is a fair introduction to the user. The incredulous reader will want to read the journal just to see if this is 'for real'.

Biography comments/suggestions :

If meant as parody, it errs on the side of being too self-consciously bad. If real, you seriously need to revamp this section because it seems like a joke.

Journal (30 points) 6 points each

1. Do they post frequently? Are there large gaps between posts? If so do they give explanations why?

Journal been in existence about 7 weeks. Posted fairly regularly during school holidays but only 3 times in September though has perked up a little this week. Seems the Americans have bike racks rather than bike sheds for illicit sexual encounters. (2 points)

2. Is the journal overall grammatically correct? Is the spelling, capitalization, punctuation good? Is it easy to read?

That she can use grammar is apparent from early posts but lack of grammar, poor spelling and wild punctuation becomes more outrageous as the journal proceeds. As seen here:

BTW OMFG STFU GJ @ U!!!!!!!!!!!! THIS JOURNAL IS NOOOOOOOOOOOOOTTTTTTTTT FAKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Remarkably many entries remain readable as though user fighting against her desire to write properly. (2 points)

3. Depth of posts: Do the posts have much substance to them? Do their posts consist of a good length or are they brief? Do the posts make you want to continue reading the journal?

Substance? Very lightweight. Lots of rants. I can see why some folk enjoy it in terms of a parody. (2 points).

4. Do posts flow well or is it difficult to follow their train of thought in journal entries?

Her train of thought all over the place yet underlying there is suggestion of conscious dumbing down on part of the writer. (2 points)

5. Do the posts have overall variety? Do they stay on one subject or write about various things/events? Do they post pictures, links, quizzes or polls, if they do are they hidden by the lj-cut tags? Does that make up a major part of the journal or is there a balance between those things and written entries? Quizzes links and polls should be kept to a minimum and the lj cut tags should be used to cover them?

Quizzes are posted without lj-cut and there is very little of the journal and even less of it that can be taken seriously to warrant many points for variety. ( 3 points)

Journal 11 of 30 points

30 Excellent journal. Highly recommended!
22-29 Good journal. Great read. Recommended.
15-21 Fair journal. Good read, could use some changes.
8-14 Below average journal. Needs improvements.
0-7 Poor journal. Immediate improvements highly recommended.

Journal comments/suggestions :

Not a fake? Get thee to Goth with a Sledgehammer. If meant as a parody, then it fails in the sense that it lacks a sense of purpose beyond winding up folk.

Style (8 points)

Is the journal customized with a color scheme other then the standard lj settings? Are links customized? Is the design of the journal appealing? Does it go together? Is the journal friends only or public? Are comments enabled? If so can anyone post comments?

Purposely horrid combination of clashing customized colours yet with a suitably gothic background. Links are customised throughout the journal. Comments enabled for all with IP addresses logged for anonymous posters. Public journal.

Style: 4 of 8 points

8- Excellent design/customization.
5-7 Good style.
2-4 Average style. Could use some minor customization.
0-2 Fair to poor style. Changes recommended.

Style comments/suggestions :

A monochrome or transparent background with blood red text would be interesting here in terms of design.
