Hacked via some sort of security flaw or were the passwords simply obtained via phishing or good guessing? If it is one of the latter (which is most likely), there isn't much LiveJournal/SUP can do about it.
I have also seen it called "The Great Hack of 2008". But I am not sure if it just is a few cases of email hacking and them gaining control of journals or if it is something more?
I've not heard of anyone past copperbadge and those mentioned in the comments of his journal, but it appears to be a hotmail weakness- if your original e-mail for the journal was a hotmail account, you're at risk regardless of what verified e-mail you're using now.
People have been hacking into ljs using hotmail for at least 5 years, and lj only recently started letting us (but not MAKING US) use a security question.
