the trick to sewing tiny squares

Mar 20, 2012 08:32

Pen asked what the trick is to sewing the little squares I showed yesterday. Normally, I can't make even plain old squares line up (and that's why I don't even try to get fancy with triangles). But there's an easier way to do it with lightweight fusible interfacing.

I first saw the method explained in this post: Elizabeth's Fabric Focus ~ Quick-Read more... )

There... That's it... That's the missing piece. I can totally do this and that "postage stamp" quilt is GORGEOUS. I'm totally going to try and make something. Um... As soon as I find the time. :-)

THANK YOU FOR THIS TIP!

PS: While it doesn't provide steam, this ironing tool (http://www.joann.com/clover-mini-iron-ii-assortment-tips/prd49734/) is sometimes a lot easier than a big iron and runs very hot (compensating for steam).

Oh, that ironing tool is intriguing. I have a mini iron that looks like a toy iron, meant for melting the glue iron-on bling, but have found it not very useful. That looks like it might be much more useful.

I got one on sale for doing MiniTorchwood clothes and in that case, it's been invaluable. Trying to iron inside sleeves, tiny, tight places, etc. It may not be *quite* as useful for quilting because of the steam issue (even though that is it's main purpose) - you might want feedback from other quilters before investing. But I would think the agility and compact nature would be better in the long run - Easier to do sitting in front of the TV, etc. The triangle wedge is great for lots of long seams. I've been quite pleased with it.

That is so clever! No wonder everything looks wonderfully neat. Excellent wheeze!

I reserve the right to be impressed by your patchwork nonetheless.

I reserve the right to be flattered when you're impressed. Thank you!

:)

I do love that I'll be able to make things now that will look like they took tons more work than they really did. The office ladies who get holiday gifts from me do not need to know the truth!
