I wonder if the high hit stories found their way into a mass-aggregator or something... I know that some of my website pages got sucked into rss feeds (for completely icky reasons) and the hit count on them is ridiculous. e.g. someone posts a link to a story in, say Wil Wheaton's twitter, and every celebrity aggregator watching it refeeds it to another that refeeds it to another that refeeds it and before you know it, *thousands* of people have linked to the page for no other reason than they were stupid enough to hit the link.
I do wonder if every time someone comes back to read the next chapter, if it adds to the hit count. Supposedly it's one hit per IP address, and yet... I don't know.
There are a couple fics in the fandom with 29,000+ hits. I think something else has got to be going on with those.

I am always suspicious of page hit counts.
